What Makes A Good Captain

Hey Guys,

I just started this thread so that I could, and all of the captains, and all of the crew members learn what makes a good captain. What do look for in a captain. Is it quick-thinking? decisiveness? the strongest player on the ship in skills? availability? problem-solving? maturity?

What do you guys think makes a good captain, and what do you think a good captain needs to be a good captain in this game. (If possible, provide some scenarios where a good captain can show his worth) I'm also going to be running a poll that can just show what is the ebst feature that you think a captain should have......

I'm trying to make this thread really helpful, so guys try to atleast stay on topic - and make your posts count!

Problem Solving, I'd rather have someone who took their time and ended up making the right choice then someone who made a decision quickly and got us all killed.

However, most skills listed are needed, you definately need a trustworthy, available, and problem solving leader.If they aren't available, should they really even be leading? (There are excuses though as to why one would be unavailable, that I myself would consider alright, such as they are already trying to help someone else out.)

Problem-solving gets my vote, too. Problems both inside the crew, inter-crew problems, and problems inside the game. All different types of problems, yeah, but if your captain has the skills to solve them all, you've got it made. Trust and availability are pretty big, too. Maturity isn't necessary, in my opinion, but can make things much more enjoyable.

It would be cool if you could rate the possibilities, rather than just pick one.  Honesty & being trustworthy could almost be coupled together.  If a person isn't honest, you most likely wouldn't trust them.  I agree with Eligoh that problem solving is more important than decisiveness, but quick thinking would need to go in there somewhere.  I also think that the 'strongest character' is probably the least important aspect of a leader, but availability is also very important.  A good leader could utilize the strengths of his team to achieve the task at hand more efficiently.  I guess what would be ideal is a good balance of these traits, while being stronger in problem solving would be best in my opinion.

Once you find a Captain that displays the majority of these traits, you would hope they would be mature...which I don't think will be a problem anymore.

I think all of these are important qualities. A good captain, and any person for that matter, should work to have a good mix of all or most of them.

not just the mix, but they should defently be mature....come on now, lets not make the same mistakes twice.  its gotta be someone whos on regularly, and is fun to be around. someone cool...someone like...Me! yup i nominate myself as captain, yay!

A leader should be all those things, except they dont have to have the strongest character. Most often in history, leaders havent been the greatest fighters, but could lead their troops efficiently.

I think a good captain has to have the ability to inspire it's team.  He has to be able to bring out the best of out them.

He also have to be inspire and demand respect.  Nobody will follow orders from someone they don't respect.

As we all know there are always problems in any group.  A captain has to be able to solve these problems and keep its team on track.
