Beta and your PC specs
« on: September 07, 2011, 02:58:46 pm »
I've been having conversations with various people from work and other gaming buddies and the big concern alot of them are having is whether their PC can handle TOR.  So i'm trying to get an idea of what specs everyone who's in the beta is running and how they think its performing.  Info would be greatly appreciated.

My old specs - Q6600 quad 2.4ghz, 4gigs ram, Nvidia GT260, WD Raptor HD
Result - Almost unplayable on certain areas

New rig - i5-2500k, 16gigs PC1600 ram, AMD 6950, Crucial M4 128gig SSD,
Result - Zero slowdowns of any sort 60-90fps, even while live streaming 25fps+

only "lag" issues with game have been server latency related

My current specs Q8200 2.33Ghz OC'd to 4ghz, 8gigs ram, Nvidia GTX570 runs every game currently on full settings with little slowdown (wish i was in beta) but if you only receive problems in certain areas that may not be your machine that is causing the problem as it may be down to server optimization on the beta build not allocating enough blades for high population areas ive been in a lot of betas that were like this but the problem was sorted out in open beta testing.

Core i7 920, 6GB RAM, Radeon 6950 and it runs mostly ok.  Any performance hits I think are due to the client still not being optimized and more than likely lots and lots of logging going on in the background.

There are many areas where it still lags to shit.

I was contemplating a i7 but couldnt justify the expense for the small increase in performance as upgrading to an i7 would mean new ram new mobo and new cpu intstead i got 4gb more ram and a good gfx card

i think Jp's point to this is that while in beta, he's been able to play on two completely different rigs. One about 4-5 years old (video card much newer though), which had lots of lag issues, and his new computer which experiences no issues in the same areas that used to be problematic.

So that points more to TOR really requiring the high-end specs to be played to full enjoyment. And we should maybe not count on lots of client optimization.

Correct me if i'm wrong here Jp.

Core i7 2600K, ASUS Sabertooth X58, 16GB RAM, GTX 570 SLI, Kingston 64GB SSD, and overall it runs great.  However, as Likwid stated, it can lag terribly in some areas.

I have an M11xR2, so I'm hoping that SWTOR will run smoothly on medium settings at least *cross fingers*

So, that's a Core i7 U640, 8GB RAM and GeForce GT 335M

I'm swapping out my 4gb 1600 OCZ AMD BE RAM for 8gb 1333 GSkill RAM. As sexy looking as the black edition ram is, i'm not able to utilize it like I thought I would, and they're not technically on the asus 790's QVL. I don't know that 8gb is necessary for swtor, but I'm always running enough crap to hold around 2.5-3gb usage (yes running 64bit). I don't like going over half my capacity :-)

I'm confident a mildly OC'd 5850 can handle the graphics on max, I'm only really worried about my processor (unlocked 555BE OC'd to 3.6x4) being a bottleneck.

geez, you're worried about a quad 3.6? I hope that was a joke. :P

I'm running a core 2 duo 1.8 with an intel board and was running at max graphics just fine. :P
Gefore GTX 470 with 4 gb of ram to go with it, but still. It even said my processor was too slow to install it, initially. But I had no issues with load time or FPS.

Honestly I wasn't joking. Even if a system has great specs, the game itself may not be very optimized or coded efficiently (i.e. turning on shadows in darkfall). Back in the day I got a gaming laptop specifically to play MxO and while it could run the game at max settings for pretty screenshots, it wasn't practical for anything else really. So when our next venture into SWTOR was confirmed I decided that even if I had to build a system on a tight budget (although I ended up building two!) I would try to aim for running the game at max settings in everyday use (I'm not above min/maxing for pvp). An example of this mentality was my choice of the 555 black edition processor, which I believe is unique in it's architecture making it the most powerful processor I could get for my $100 cpu limit at the time.

along the same mentality, having a solid ISP plan to reduce lag and network throttling was a big priority. Coupled with living in a major metropolitan area (think apartment buildings all using the same comcast node), I pushed to get a nice fat symmetrical 25/25 FiOS connection. So far I've been very happy with the connection stability and lower observed latency (compared to comcast).

I think that's a solid system just based off the video card http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-555M.41933.0.html

The real question is whether SWTOR on max puts as much stress on the card as games like maxed out Crysis 2, BFBC2 or Risen do. I am willing to bet that it does not.
