Bit of old news, but I didn't see any posts on the subject:

I think this was to be expected to begin with. And it's still not to say that "No open beta" equates to "No largely accessible closed beta" or some form of pre-order beta.

I'm hoping that by open, they mean "publicly accessible to be downloaded."  That would mean that simply seeding sites with beta keys to give away would be an option, and would given them a good crowd to work with.  I just want them to be 100% sure that their servers can handle the strain of launch day.

I have always considered, and I think Bioware do too, that Open Beta has become less about stress testing and bug quashing.  It's more about a free try-before-you-buy of the game.  Often a trial that is still marked by bugs and exploits that would taint the overall impression of the game.

They've always said that they don't consider a beta to be game testing - they consider it to be a try-before-you-buy type of thing. They don't even call the current beta "beta". They call it "game testing". I think the most they'll do is a stress test using pre-orders or something similar. I hear this past weekend they were stress testing, and somehow they were able to do it with only the 1000 testers that they had mentioned during E3...
