The giant pits are called "chunk errors", when a game client fails to load a portion of the map.

Disconnecting and reconnecting should fix it.

I actually prefer the default textures.  I think a lot of the texture packs and lighting mods take away from the charm of the game.

As long as I'm having fun, I don't need the graphics to be uber.

Hey likwidtek, I don't seem to be on the whitelist for the new server, could you add me?  Still troubleshooting and seeing if I can get minecraft to work without crashing the computer.
