Whaaaat? Who decided Abe was the best choice for a vampire hunter? And how did he get his powers to split trees in half with a single axe swing?! Where did he learn axe kung-fu?! Where do I learn axe kung-fu?! :D

Not that I won't see it, of course... AWESOME!

Because even vampires wouldn't dare take on Teddy Roosevelt.  Lack of conflict can make for a boring story.

Honestly, I just like movies that don't try to bullshit me.  With a title like "Abe Lincoln - Vampire Hunter", I know exactly what I'm getting.  The serious tone of the trailer is obviously tongue-in-cheek, and I just like it when personages of historical significance are re-imagined in ridiculous settings.

And because axe-fu.

A little bird told me this evening that if I 'Liked' the Facebook page for Tribes Ascend, I could get a beta key. Re-activated my Facebook account long enough to do exactly that and I am pleased to report that I was not disappointed. Even if you don't like the concept of F2P games, I believe that Hi-Rez has put together a reasonable and fair approach to their purchasable offerings.

Chief among these offerings is their choice to make all classes/weapons/perks that are purchasable via gold (purchased with real money) are also purchasable via XP (gained through play). I believe that this is crucial for a proper F2P game to work, ensuring that the best upgrades are universally available. Likewise, upgrading perks and abilities can only be done by spending XP, which I believe helps to ensure a fair reward for paid and free players alike. Purchase incentivization is straight-forward, and simple; by making a single purchase, regardless of the amount, players gain a permanent 50% XP boost, VIP servers, as well as a bonus period of boosted XP gains.

The concept of Free-To-Play (F2P) games is one that I've struggled with over the years. Many attempts have been made at it in the past, but usually ham-handedly so, what with paying players having a decisive edge over non-paying players. In my opinion, this approach is much fairer in it's treatment of both sides of the equation by simply making purchases a shortcut to unlocking rewards.

An important side note: I haven't played enough to make a solid call on this, but insofar as I can tell, the base three classes you are given access to stand on equal ground with all of the other classes. Unlocking any reward does not necessarily give you an direct, static advantage, so much as it gives you more options. More ways to play the game.

Of special mention is the movement system: combining the jetpacks of the original Tribes with a 'Skiing' movement system ensures an intense amount of mobility, allowing even the heavier classes to traverse large maps with ease.

Even if you have no desire to put up money for in-game rewards, an intense and competitive shooter like this being available for FREE is worth spending the time to download and try out for a few rounds to see what has been made. Having played the original Tribes, I walked away from the experience satisfied simply by seeing the revival of the 'shoot fast, run faster' flavor of FPS that Tribes Ascend has to offer.

Sared, thanks for the info on Tribes Ascend. I hadn't really followed it at all, but I remember playing Tribes a long, long time ago. So, I'm installing now. Should be something fun to pass the time while SWTOR is down for maintenance in the future.

This was actually a book first.. and actually a pretty decent read if you are bored..

It is one of many books coming out as an ALT history novel.. I think it all started with the steampunk craze..
some of the stuff is good and some is NOT.. I heard pride prejudice and zombies (which I think falls under this category) was extremely well done..

So, honestly, I think this movie will actually be done as a "serious action vampire movie"... I mean.. cant be worse than Twilight right?
