Looking at tablets right now.  I'm sure you did a comparison?  Any tidbits of wisdom you can share?  Android?

I won't do ipads. They're good products, but I like to tweak and hack my devices which android lends itself to very well.
I got the asus transformer. Love it. There are a few quirks I'm not thrilled with, but it's am amazing option for the price ($400).

I was looking at that one actually.  Did you grab the 32 gb one?  I was thinking that one with the optional keyboard (and it has an additional battery) for when I need to work a little more and compose full on emails/documents where I need a little more than just the touch pad on the go.

What is it you don't like about it?  Any real short comings/game breakers?

Thanks for the input.

Honeycomb file structure is messed up in regards to SDcards. The internal SDCard folder is called "SDCard" but is part of the main memory. This means any apps you may use that are meant to work directly with an sdcard will still be referencing space on the 16gb (in my case) drive. The external card is stored in /Removable/MicroSD/. In my case it's mostly annoying because I'm rooted an use titanium backup to backup all my settings and apps. But it's coded to backup to /sdcard/ yet if I wipe the drive for a new rom it will mess with that - so after I back that up, I have to move the files to MicroSD, then move it back when I want to restore items. It also means you can't move apps to the "MicroSD". Hopefully this will be changes in a software update in the future.

Deal breaker? Absolutely not. Because of this I would have gotten the 32GB one had I known this and had the Best Buy I went to had them in stock. I did not get the keyboard, but plan to in the future. I've heard good things about it. Be sure to google for the shortcuts when you get it. A buddy of mine also got this the same day I did with the keyboard, so hopefully I'll get to use it tomorrow at work. The office app that comes with it, Polaris, is pretty nice, but doesn't accept password protected spreadsheets, so I upgraded to DocumentsToGo - which I had already bought for my phone.

I did have an odd issue with the Market, but it's a google issue - not a transformer issue. Eventually when I would try to install apps I would get the message "Error processing purchase" - even if it was a free app. I would have to switch to my wifes account within the market in order to download it.

We got this originally because my wife wanted an ereader. We liked the nook color, but the price is too high, especially for features w either didn't care about or already had in our phones. For an extra $50, we considered the new A100 7" tab, which we saw the price for at $350 at walmart. Unfortunately, it isn't out yet. I've been drooling for a 10 inch tab for a while, primarily for photography purposes. I've also wanted to the transformer for a long while as well, because I love that it can turn to a netbook with ease. The battery is not bad for what it is... It says about 9 hours, and so far that seems about right on.

For the price, you can't beat it.

2 thing.... I took off work early to goto the pool on Friday. Because I had some stuff I still had to get done I decided to work over the weekend... at our company park/pool.

Awesome.

BTW, the wife is here and says trying to read the Transformer in direct sunlight is damn near impossible. That will be the case for most though.

So after reading your input I have a little comfort in my direction.

Your conclusions were basically the same as mine for a lot of the same reasons.  I was looking at a tab for myself for a while but it was my daughter wanting a reader that drove me to look seriously.  We started at Amazon looking at Kindles, went to B&N and looked at the Nook and Nook color.  Down the road to Best Buy and we saw the standard iPads and then a few other tablets including the one you picked up.

So my evaluation was that the color nook (at $249) does a little more than the standard B&W reader but it's not a full on tablet PC.  If you want a reader with B&W high contrast that is a work horse even in full sun go grab the Kindle or Nook basic model for $140ish or less.  Simple, long life battery, no frills but B&W.  That being said if you want a more diverse social media consumption apppliance with websites, email, social media, videos, and multiple readers (B&N, Kindle, ibooks) you really do yourself justice by spending the few extra dollars to get a Transfomer which I think priced out at just a little over $300.  Add the extra 16 GB to get to 32 GB total for a little over $100 and the optional keyboard for another $135 or so and you have something in the area of $550 which is basically a low end laptop.

I can't see getting the basic readers (color matters to me and therefore it matters to my daughter) so then I'm just sorta stuck at how much more does she (or me because I'm gonna write mine off as a business related expense) need?

I think I need more knowledge about the OS and interoperability at this point.  I love how Apple integrates but isn't iPad still a single task OS?  No Flash?  Tether challenged unless I get an AT&T contract?  Meh.. a lot more to learn in my opinion.

Love to know how the keyboard works for you if you can steal your friend's for a little.

Thanks again for the good discussion.

iPad handle multi tasking now... somewhat. And it depends what you mean by tether. I tether the tab to my phone, as I didn't bother with the 3G version because I refuse to pay for it. I have a phone that is always on me that I can tether through wifi. Win.

We did the same dance as you with the readers. Best buy had the 16gb for 400, the 32gb for 500, and the keyboard for 150.
If the 7inch A100 was out we probably would have gotten that, but I'm happy with this.
