If you can get me a job down there I'm yours! My buddy is at school there and it would be sick to live down there.

Wait... you had mention it's 1k a person - so your rent/mortgage is 3k a month? I thought you were looking for 1 person.
If it's a rental then holy crap are you getting ripped off.

And I thought I was getting ripped off for paying £325/$580 a month!

I lived down in San Clemente for a time, close to LA.  For renting a bedroom out of a 3 bedroom apartment and splitting it with 2 other guys, I was paying 500 a month and counting myself damn lucky.  I could easily believe 3k for renting an apartment, particularly if it's IN LA proper and even remotely in a good location.

On a side note, Lits, if you can find a job for a physics graduate down there, I'd be happy to split rent :-D

damn. I don't make enough to justify that - 3k a month for a mortage would buy a mansion on a 2 acre plot where I live. California in general is a messed up place economically anyways - beach living just makes it insanly worse.

Bad News:
-Unless my advisor can work something out for me and get me some special dispensation, I won't be able to graduate next semester, even though I was on track to graduate just fine. I can't take my Cost and Managerial Accounting class because I haven't taken a second Statistics class. I was originally supposed to take it this semester, but there was a time conflict between that Statistics class and my Tax Accounting class, and I just figured I could take it next semester. I never realized that that Statistics class was a prerequisite to this class. I tried to send in an override, saying that I can't take a MKT 317 this summer because I have an internship, and that I'm supposed to be graduating at the end of the Fall, and that I studied abroad last semester so I wasn't able to take that Statistics class last semester, and that I was formerly in the Honors College a year ago from this point when I was planning my schedule. My membership in the Honors College meant that I didn't have to worry about prerequisites in classes, and that if I had stayed in the Honors College, I wouldn't be in this position right now. Most likely I will end up dual-enrolling in the Masters program here and take that Managerial Accounting class while I'm in the Masters program. Just sucks because I'll probably have to take a summer class or two...

Ugh. To make matters even worse, the MSU Masters in Accounting program won't accept any higher level accounting class if you get less than a 3.0. They literally won't even consider your application if you got a 2.5 in a single Accounting class, no matter your average. I'm hovering between a 2.5 and a 3.0 right now in my ACC 301 class (the class from hell... when the fuck am I ever going to personally have to account for a lease, a pension, or any other of that random bullshit?!). I went to talk to my Professor earlier this week, and he said that I need about an 85-90% on the final to get a 3.0 in the class. While certainly manageable if I put a lot of effort into my studying, the great Michigan State University won't allow you to retake a class if you get a 2.5 in it. However, if you get a 2.0, you're allowed to retake a class. Basically, if I study my ass of for two weeks and end up with a 79% on the final, I'll end up with a 2.5 in the class, unable to retake the class to boost my GPA in the class AND unable to get into the Michigan State Accounting graduate program. He told me it's better to not risk being unable to retake the class and intentionally fail the class. I told him that this was the first Accounting class that I was seriously having a hard time with (my GPA is 3.61/4). He told me that, unlike my prior Accounting classes, this class involves learning, while the others required more memorization. EXCUSE ME!? DID YOU JUST INSULT MY INTELLIGENCE?

Currently, because I was on track to graduate, barring the minor mis-step mentioned above, I was planning on applying to graduate school. Well, you can't do that if you have a 2.0 on your transcript. So grad school is delayed a semester.

That entire fucking class came down to one exam. I bombed on one exam because I had two other exams that week, including an exam in my Tax class. (I know, I know, time management, etc. etc. I'm just venting) The second exam I did 2 points below the average, so if I had just done average on the first one, I would have been fine.

Whoever says that one exam doesn't affect the rest of your life is severely and utterly mistaken. The only silver lining is that I could probably/possibly get a second Tax internship next Winter at KPMG. The cool thing about that would be that I could get a lot of overtime (as its during Tax season) and I would be done by the first week of March, just in time for my birthday. I could then stay in East Lansing for March and April and have fun with my roommates (while studying for the CPA exam) and start graduate school in the Summer or Fall.

If things work out that way, it would be fine. I just hate when things don't work out how you'd like them to.

...And we will strike down upon those of Darkness, with great vengeance and Furious Anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.

When is that exam?  Are you going to let it pass so you can retake the class?  Either way, I'm sorry to hear about that dilemma, it really is ridiculous that they won't just let you retake it regardless of grade.

I got screwed by my own college, if not QUITE as badly.  I took AP Calculus in high school and did ok on the AP test, so I was able to pass out of some college Calc.  This was the quarter system, so you have fall, winter, and spring quarters.  Normally for a physics major, you take calc I-III for that first year, but my freshman advisor told me I had passed out of taking all of those.  Which makes sense, because all of that covered exactly what my high school Calc class as covered, as it was a BC Calc class.  Flash forward to spring break, senior year.  THis is weeks before Spring quarter, my last quarter before I graduate.  I get a call from the advising office saying they had looked at my graduation application, and noticed that I was missing two classes for my major...heart pounding, I ask what.  Calc II and Calc III.  But I passed out of those!  Nope, as it turns out.  I just passed out of Calc I.  Keep in mind, by this time I had taken Calc IV and Calc V  (not the official designation, but definitely a continuation of the Calc series).  I had been using Fourier series and other Calc III shit in my physics classes for fucking AGES.  Now they're telling me I won't graduate because my freshman adviser screwed up?!

Fortunately, my professor was willing to waive the classes as being necessary for my major, mainly because as I said before, I had been using this stuff for ages, he knew I knew it.  For my math minor, however...well, let's say that professor had a reputation as a hardass (got the lowest grades in my college career (C+s) in two of his classes, so I imagine that didn't help).  He was softening up as he got older, but he was still reluctant to just waive the requirements for my math minor.  So, I ended up taking exams for both classes, passed with flying colors, and lived happily ever after.  But it still gets me livid, to this day, that I had to go through that shit because of the incompetence of the advising system.
