randomness (music)
« on: September 16, 2009, 05:58:27 pm »
I got to thinking that we need a thread where people can randomly share whatever music they're listening to and/or think others should be exposed to. While artist/song name suggestions are welcome, being able to actively listen to the music via a stream is what I'm going for here.

Phienyx inspired me to post a few more examples of music from Tipper.

I always equated Tipper's music as offbeat music you could play in the background of movie (or an episode of CSI as the case may be), though most of his music you can't really appreciate without a nice sub.

Relish the Trough
Ton of Brix
Run4Cover
Veil Lifter
Tiny Face
Daved and Confused (used in CSI, how I found this artist in the first place).
No Dice
Couch Barrels
Minimal Thoughts of Reason
If all the world's problems were solved today, what would you have left to do tomorrow?

Hmm.. Well i know it's from a game, but Monster Hunter has some REALLY epic feeling music tracks when fighting all sorts of different monsters...

The one stuck in my head at the moment is this one in particular... He's such a BITCH to fight.

and a band that was recently formed that i had just got into is Cain's Offering

Here's there album.

Most of that stuff is pretty good to drive to.

Really liked that one Tecknik

Edward Elgar - Variations on an Original Theme for orchestra, Op. 36 (Enigma Variations) (opening theme should sound familiar for matrix purists)

Sorry didn't realize that recording has noise artifacts in the middle, for those of you who just wanted to skip to the most well known variation click here.

Great idea, Dag.

The piece I was looking for by Tipper called Illabye was a piece I heard in the TV Show "Criminal Minds".  It was well used and created a very eerie mood.  I've always been fascinated with movie music and how music is used in conjunction with visual story telling.  You can listen to the music from a movie and even if the music isn't the most brilliantly written symphony you've ever heard, it will still transport you back to the mood and atmosphere it created when you were watching the movie.

By the way this is one of my current favorite songs.  MK Ultra from Muse's newest album: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r02_A-3LOc

I usually prefer music with as few lyrics as possible.  I've been listening to a lot of post-rock for the last few years.  Here is a small selection of my favorites.

The Album Leaf - "Window"; Excellent song to listen to on a rainy day.

Explosions In The Sky - "The Birth and Death of Day"; Good motivator music.

God Is An Astronaut - "Rememberance Day"; Another rainy day song, but a little more upbeat.

God Is An Astronaut - "Infinite Horizons"; Melancholy made audible.

Mogwai - "Acid Food"; Yet more rainy day music.  Noticing a trend yet?

After Burning Man I have to recommend BassNectar, as well... he played almost every night and was the biggest hit on the playa... apparently he plays 350 nights a year throughout the West Coast and Canada. I wasn't really into "raver" music, but I really enjoyed him... actually got me dancing!

The soundtrack to Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is... well... excellent!  *Air guitar*

It makes me sad that kids today have to grow up with algorithmically generated, auto-tune-laden, Pro Tools bullshit.  I wonder if they know what a real drum set sounds like.
