Maybe so. From the descriptions I've read, it seems that JK are the ones that jump into the middle of the battle and take all the heat, getting up close and personal with the sabers. Troopers are also well protected, but are tactically best at a ranged distance. So JKs attract the heat, Consulars and Troopers provide support through buffs and crowd control, and Smugglers do DPS.

It could be something different. I guess we'll have to wait and see! I'll either roll as a Jedi Knight or Smuggler. My playstyle is usually stealth DPS, but for roleplay purposes, I can't really see myself as anything other than a Jedi Knight.

Jedi Consular for me, hands down. Support all the way!

...And we will strike down upon those of Darkness, with great vengeance and Furious Anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.

Two scans of a german PC game magazine regarding the Consular and Inquisitor... the Sith Inquisitor looks wicked, it's so tempting to play as one!

Translation:

    Jedi-Consluar[sic]:
“Class number 7 is the Jedi-Consular. Other than the a few weeks ago revealed Jedi-Knight the Consular is not found in the first frontline. Though he can handle the lightsaber, the Consular also masters a few different long-range combat abilities such as “Sleep”, “Lift” or “Smash”. The class can for once be played offensively on damage oriented or specialize in healing. Therewith the Jedi-Consular is a really powerful supporter-class in The Old Republic.

    Abilities:
    Sleep
    Lift
    Smash
    Force Push
    Reflect”

    Sith-Inquisitor:
“The Sith Inquisitor is the last of the totally eight character-classes, that will be at the ready with the launch of SWTOR. The Inquisitor is the counterpart of the Consular and also a fighter in the second ow. Suited with force-abilities as “shock” or “lightning-stroke” he can fire his enemies up, as we were able to convince ourselves during a thorough gaming session. One quest sent us into an old Sith grave, with swarms of huge killer-worms (K’lor’slug Ravager) and deserted Imperials running around. With the aid of the area-of-effect skill “Overload”, that can not only damage nearby enemies, but also knock them down a stun for a few seconds, we quickly killed the brood.

    Abilities:
    Sabrestrike
    Shock
    Execute
    Overload
    Lightning Stroke
    Whirlwind
    Dark Gift
    Call Ferry
    Dark Meditation”

Jedi Knight or Smuggler for me.

I can't decide if long robes and light sabers are cooler than space pirating.

Personally, I prefer melee to ranged in most MMOs. Of course we'll see how SWTOR pulls it off...

Right now I'm hoping that the smuggler class will have some sort of melee implemented somewhere, so it's not just range, range and more range. I'd rather, as far as RPing goes, play a smuggler, and for that reason I'm hoping I get to whack someone with something pointy if I choose to go that route.

Furious since January 11, 2009

I usually prefer ranged classes - but have such a strong urge to be a JK and I'm not sure why. =/
