When a pilot comes back from a combat mission the polite thing to do, IMO, is to assume they have taken a life and to NOT bring it up. I've killed animals when hunting, and I still remember my first. I was only 12 and it had an effect on me - I changed. If I am put into the situation where I have to take a human life to save another, I am willing but I know it will change me again. My answer to that question will probably always be that I did what I had to do to survive and protect my allies.

I do not know from experience, but I have a buddy I went to police academy with who had to take a life in the line of duty.  I never asked him about it, but I can tell it changed him.

I've been medically disqualified for my pilot slot because I have tubes in my ears... You know, those things that equalize pressure? DQ'd despite classic world war era pilots puncturing thier eardrums just before flight. DQ'd despite it being a reversable proceedure. DQ'd depite allowing them, as long as you are already on duty.

I'm pushing for an exception to policy waiver. Please pray for me.
