I'm in the same boat as Jeyk. The only thing I know about handgun models is what people tell me and opinions are so varied it's impossible to distinguish. Aside from buying magazines and reading specs I won't understand, is there a more efficient (idiot's guide?) to learning about them?

ps.... are those S&W Sigma small enough to fit in a purse? I'm liking the price.

And for Subb's benefit... I will soon be living alone again, and although I don't have to walk to and from in the middle of the night anymore, Hattiesburg is still a bit violent and I have "EASY TARGET" written all over my forehead. And there's a very nice range near my place in Mobile where I could go and practice, learn to clean it and take care of it, cause if you don't know what you're doing you're more likely to hurt yourself in a threatening situation than defend yourself.

how did i know that pirus was going to jump in on this? lol

so i think i'm going with the S&W Sigma 9... now i just have to jump through the hoops and red tape to get the damned thing... this is ALABAMA... you'd think you could buy one at the gas station for $10.99 with a Skoal purchase

I strongly suggest going to your local shooting range (if they have firearm rentals), and testing out a few different firearms before deciding on one from seeing pictures.  All firearms are made differently, as are people.  A firearm that is a great fit for one person, may not be a great fit for another person.  You need to see how the firearm you are thinking about purchasing fits your hand, and how comfortable you feel firing it.

I'll have my Ruger P95 9mm by Monday. :D

Still, never fired a gun.  I'm looking forward to taking it to the range.

Now that you've brought this thread up.....

After getting into an argument and truly WISHING I'd already bought a gun so that I could USE IT on someone?

I've decided that I shouldn't own a weapon. Cause I like NOT going to jail.

How much does it cost in your state?  It's $117 here, which is the only thing steering me away from getting it at the moment.  Plus, I have a fear of accidentally shooting myself in the nuts.  Protect the genes!  I'll get over it in due time. :)

$140. I assuming it will cost a couple bucks more for the fingerprinting services, training course, and return postage as well.

Of course, this is all before I have the money to actually purchase a handgun. :)

I've been looking at Glocks. Always loved 'em. Dependable, sturdy as hell, and solid shooters.

Of course, if I had the money I would get a Mateba 6 Unica. (I.E., Vash's gun ah-la Trigun)

Well, I'm finally going to do it.

I'm purchasing this from Gander Mountain and had to have it shipped in from another store as there were only 6 in the company out of 115 stores and none in their distribution center:

Isn't that the sexiest thing you've ever seen?
