Yotogi, I've never seen this thread before.  I think it's amazing what you do and I have so much respect for you in that you take time out of your life and volunteer.  I think what you do is great and I really appreciate it.  :)  True hero stuff.

Thanks for the kind words likwid, but really I do it because when you get to be my age playing with Tonka trucks just doesn't cut it.

On another note, here are a couple of photos of the fatal fire I reported on a few posts back. [Reminder: The Firefighters were on the 3rd floor and fell through to the 2nd Floor]

Artistically, that second photo is really neat; it looks like it's all been digitally rendered and is a scene from a Next-Gen game.

And the above statement, of course, is not meant to be taken out of context. I'm heartbroken over those who died in the accident. It is truly devastating. I'm glad that you're OK, yotogi...

Just to clarify and as I stated earlier, I was not on this particular call.  Thank you anyway Ana.

what would cause a flashover like that? I didn't think buildings just errupted into massive flame anymore b/c of modern wiring requirements and the fire retardant in pillows, bedspreads, drapes, couches... etc...

Sorry, I just finished a book about a forensic pathologist who's working with a federal fire investigation squad, so now i'm all curious

ON SCENE REPORT FOR AUGUST 14:Single vehicle collision into a Jersey wall with driver trapped in her upside down vehicle.  Driver was freed from her vehicle and her wounds were tended to and was later released from the hospital.

Upon hitting the Jersey wall (the concrete barrier that separates the two flows of traffic) pieces of concrete are thrown into the oncoming lane thereby causing 5 more accidents.  Luckily there were only minor injuries and some damage to the vehicles.  We had to shut down the highway just so we could deal with all chaos and debris.

While the scene was being reopened a driver apparently didn't see a stop police car and swerved to miss it, causing it to flip over and slide 100 yards down the road, he too was okay.

So, first accident was on the North bound lanes, then 5 more on South bound lanes, then 1 last one again on the North bound lanes.  We were out there for several hours cleaning up the messes.

This was a week ago.

ON SCENE REPORTS FOR AUGUST 21:  This one is a bit lengthy so bear with me.

5pm:  My first call of the shift.  Multiple vehicle accident caused by a tire blow-out.  One patient pinned in a Ford Explorer, no life threatening injuries.  Accident took place on I-270 Northbound.

7:30pm: My third call of the shift.  Single vehicle accident, overturned vehicle on I-270 Southbound with driver unconscious and trapped between Jersey wall and driver-side door.  Crushed skull with multiple contusions, lacerations and decompressions to the face and torso.  Driver's head made contact with pavement three separate times (I'll leave it up to you to figure out how we figured that out).  Apparently a driver in another vehicle had fallen asleep at the wheel and drifted into the other drivers lane, hitting the vehicle and causing it to lose control and flip over.
UPDATE:  The driver was taken to the nearest Trauma Center where it was determined that she suffered only minimal brain damage and will most likely pull through.  a-fucking-mazing.

12:00am:  My sixth call of the shift...

Video 1:  http://www.wusa9.com/video/default.aspx?maven_playerId=immersiveplayer&maven_referralPlaylistId=playlist&maven_referralObject=829239879

Video 2: http://www.wusa9.com/video/default.aspx?maven_playerId=immersiveplayer&maven_referralPlaylistId=playlist&maven_referralObject=829512597

There are several other videos from all the other news broadcasts but these were some of the better ones.

The highway was shutdown until 6:30am Friday morning.

During the call we got word from 911 that somewhere in the sea of stopped traffic about 15 car lengths back there was a pregnant woman in a red Honda going into active labor.

And not to be outdone...
1:01am:My seventh call of the shift.  House fire.  Three story house fire, fully involved.  House had no occupants and there were no injuries.  All units were put back in service at 4:00am after fire had been extinguished and all salvage and overhaul had been performed.

@ Sixth Call - 12:00AM

That makes me furious.  What a son of a bitch.  To flee from the scene on foot, without even checking on the people you hit.  He deserves to have the damn book thrown at him.

Rest in peace, to the 10 year old killed in that horrible accident. :(

I'd embed the videos but they want to start playing automatically and I don't know how to stop them from doing that.

Closed my patio door tonight because I could smell smoke. I heard sirens in the distance and thought there was a fire maybe a few blocks over. Went back to watching TV and suddenly heard the fire alarm go off. I thought "hmm, the smoke coming from outside must have set off our fire alarm" and went to tell my roommate that we should probably get out of the building. I went back to the patio door I had closed earlier and saw a shower of fire embers raining from the sky. "Ok, time to go now!"

Turns out the fire was directly across the street from my complex - extremely close. A new hotel that was being built. The fire was HUGE...I've never been that close to such a huge fire. The wind was blowing our direction and embers were falling everywhere. While I was watching the fire, I noticed a building next to me had flames on the roof. I looked up just in time to see some dude throwing a bucket of water on it. It was the complex right beside ours. Luckily that fire got out quickly.

Slowly but surely the fire across the street was beat back and the few outbursts on our side were put out. My car is covered in ash, I smell of smoke, and there are a few embers on my clothes still. I was gonna go to kinkos to print some stuff out, but I imagine our entrance is still blocked off.

Yotogi, I'm guessing you weren't called in for this one? I'm in Alexandria, and you're with DC itself, right? I did take one picture from my lobby door...maybe I can upload it in a bit.

I was wondering what the fuck that text message was about, lol.  Glad to see no one was hurt.  I'm at the station right now and just got back from our own set of fires.  Seems like it's been a busy night for DC Metro area.
