Look at Bobby Kennedy. He was not able to win the '68 election based off of his name alone, even though the American people loved the Kennedy's.

Huh... Wasn't he assassinated right after he had won the California primary?

Yes at the Ambassador hotel. The 2006 film "Bobby" is a pretty good flick if you're interested. Had he not been assassinated, there is a very good chance he'd have become president and Vietnam would have been a vastly different war.

That said, if you're well versed in the 1860 election, you know that there was a chance that the US civil might never have happened, at least not the way it did, if Lincoln hadn't won PA, Buchanan's home state.
If all the world's problems were solved today, what would you have left to do tomorrow?

I would like to get close to Hillary Clinton, and sleep with her. Only because it would give me the opprotunity to bite her dick off.

Also, John McCain is one smart cookie.

Sources? I'll need this for my essay that I'll probably have to write for my AP US History exam. I need to know all about the Civil War.

There was no more Northern aggression than Southern aggression. The main cause of the Civil War comes from the Founding Fathers. Albeit to ratify the Constitution, they had to leave out federal powers, such as those governing slavery, because there was too much controversy among the states regarding the issue (remember, the States were still under the Articles of Confederation at the time, and they needed all of the states to pass a single piece of legislation). They did not give the country the required powers to govern a system that Jefferson himself detested.

Both sides, North and South, used the Constitution as grounds for their principles. The North believed that slavery was wrong because "all men are created equal;" thus, all people should be free, black or white. Southerners, on the other hand, used the implied power clause to establish that slavery was, in fact, legal. They also believed that it was a moral obligation on their part. They believed that the Bible could be interpreted in such a way that slavery was good and they were providing for an inferior species and helping them out. They helped and provided for the slaves in exchange for the work that they did on the plantations.

Let's not forget that slavery was no more the point of the civil war than fighting Ossama Bin Laden is the point of this war. Slavery was used as a misdirection of the more political agriculture and shipping inequities between the Northern states and the Southern states.

Fuse: *;P*

Thanks for those links, Ven. They're really helpful.
Issues Lits cares about:
    Ending the Iraq war
    Abortion rights
    Homosexual marriage
    Affordable healthcare
    Concentration on education
    Keeping up with Asia *EDUCATION*

(Jeeze that makes me sound like a hippie, doesn't it?)
I have traditionally been a Republican when it comes to financial endeavors and a Democrat on social issues. I guess I could be called a very liberal Republican.

1. I want a woman president. Just not the backbiting censoring blame-everyone-but-the-parents Hillary Clinton. Besides, we've already had the Bush monarchy, I don't want a Clinton one. 2. I'm very pro-gay marriage (not in the church, but certainly in the state's eyes as a legal marriage) and so far only Guilliani has even mentioned it. He seemed to have a nice approach to it, but doesn't want to pull out of Iraq soon.  3. Mitt Romney seems to have a level head, but everyone tells me that he's an idiot. 4. John McCain is a radicalist redneck who seems to think God is on his side and he's right and you can't tell him wrong. These are the VERY people I HATE most!! I just want to put on all black, pierce every piece of my skin I can, proffess my faith in Satanism, and make out with a girl of another race in front of him, all the while having a charming conversation about Greek Literature and Botticelli's works with him. Damned tunnel visioned zealots..... 5. John Edwards: he had the better website... that's all I remember about him. Kinda doesn't stick out.

You know, I hate to say it, especially because of his extremely liberal image, but I'm going to have to go with Obama. Assuming he doesn't screw up, that is. He'll never be elected, it'll probably be Guilliani with the sympathy vote or Hilary with the novelty vote.

Besides... I live in the South... we all know why the youth group isn't voting for him.
Sceneario played out as such:
"*Gasp!* Choose between a Christian, wholesome, Bible beating man who's trying to rid us of evil abortion and a black man?! What choice?"

I feel like putting on my goth gear and scaring some of the Baptist congregation down the street.

SOOOOOO
ATM I am voting for Obama. I would like to learn more about his platform, and Newt's platform if indeed he is going to run before I OFFICIALLY do it.

P.S.... one of those websites (I think it's Hillary's) has a link to online voter registration. Because of this thread, I am now a registered voter :)

That's generally called a Libertarian.

My one line summaries of the candidates

Clinton: Fake (politics I know), doesn't truly believe/stand for anything and most importantly opportunistic to a fault.

Giuliani: When things are fine, he's kinda nuts, when things are bad, he's an American (in a good way).

McCain: Vietnam POW, old and out of touch, stubborn to a fault (a man after my own heart), a "liberal Republican (thanks Lits)" at times.

Romney: Flipflop, flopflip, great at earning money, he campaigns like he earns money, he caters to whoever will give him the most of it, hence the flippetyfloppety.

Edwards: Shadow of the Socialis.....Democratic party, his wife's cancer was the only thing that got him in the media this time around.

Obama: Intelligent, charismatic, hard working, has a podcast, actually stands for something, knows what he wants and how to properly argue for it (A Democrat? I'm shocked).

Other non-official candidates
Gingrich: Intelligent, charismatic, hard working, has a unique first name, actually stands for something, knows what he wants and how to properly argue for it (A Republican? Not so shocked).

Fred Thompson: You may know him as the DA on Law & Order, but he's also a kick ass Senator from Tennessee.

Notice I didn't go into specific topics with any of the candidates, so as not to polarize who to pick around issues.

The president is one person out of many leaders that help guide where America and the world goes. The ability to veto bills is a powerful ability, but in an ever-modernizing world society, I feel the president of the United States of America's strongest ability is to represent who we are and where we're going to ourselves (to remind/guide us) and to the rest of the world (to inspire/educate).

So the long winded question you must ask yourself in the polling booth; who is the person that is going to represent me to everyone else in the world and remind me of who I am supposed to be and where I'm going?

I would love for that person to be Gingrich, but of my current choices I pick Obama.

If we're taking bets on who will win, my money is on Giuliani.

Actually Libertarians are in the extreme when it comes to being socially liberal. IE. abolishing the tax system and having the government supported entirely through donation. Legalizing ALL illegal drugs. They are almost all objectivists (Ayn Rand's philosophy... she sums it up with "The virtue of selfishness.) Basicly they are what you get when you mix an anarchist and a capitalist.

From the sound of it Lits has very similar political views as me. Not right enough to be a republican, not left enough to be a liberal. Not extreme enough to be a libertarian. I often consider myself a Moderate Capitalist.

Amen. I think he claims a party because you have to in order to get elected. I hate political parties. It's like organized religion: No one has itcompletely right, yet no one is willing to admit it.
