Sorry, it's been a while since I was anywhere near that screen.
Make sure the the "Show compatible hardware" option is ticked, if available.

Choose any basic ATI card, or one that matches your card name specifically.
"ATI RADEON x850 SERIES" - that'll do for me, with my card.
Find one similar to that with your model, and go for it.
You can't really go wrong -  if you BSOD just SAFE MODE remove that driver.

Ok, lets recap.
DEP still disabled.
CHIPSET DRIVERS installed.
BASIC driver installed.
ATI driver installed - > BSOD (on restart).

Presume you are running XP Home or Pro.
You are trying to install this driver? : 6-11_xp-2k_dd_37616.exe?
The procedure you should be using for install is just running the EXE and running through the setup.

OR are you downloading the full catalyst?
The cat setup comes with 2 drivers (+ 1 software) : Display Driver, Catalyst Control Center, WDM Drivers.

If installing CAT, uninstall again, and try just the DRIVER.
If installing just the driver, uninstall again and try an older one, from here:

Run windows update and you'll get the framework.

Ok, good to see things are going...
Did you do a system restore? If so, then it may have uninstalled quite a lot of system type things...

I had thought you did a restore at the beginning of all this?!
