Network Problems

As some of you know, I have problems. Computer problems. On top of my flickering monitor of death, my internet now seems to "flicker". It's gotten to the point to where, once a day, I have to restart my modem and router in order to get the connection working again. I have a Linksys Wireless-G router connected to an AOL DSL connection. The internet will crap out to where I can still be on TS and Trillian, but I cannot surf the internet or do just about anything else.

Sometimes repairing my connection will work (usually temporarily), but inevitably I have to unplug the router and modem. When this happens, I have a very hard time connecting to the router from my computer (I've set it up for remote access), which makes me think it is a router problem. I can't find anything in the settings, though, that would hint that it's causing problems. I tried starting a log, but even with the log enabled, no log is created. Any suggestions? Doing a google search, all I came up with is over-heated routers.

I had a similar problem, where my connection would just die out for periods of time; I went ahead and changed the channel that the router was on.  I'm not too clear on how to do this, but I know what I did is I went on the main computer, typed in my IP address on my internet browser, and it brought me to the configuration setup menu for my router/internet connection.

I don't recall if I had to do the same thing with the reciever, but if you need to, it should be just as simple.  If all else fails, you can shoot yourself in the eye for using AOL.

Umm...well i had something like that happen too, but i have a cable modem and what i did was just run a whole new cable staight outside and hooked it up to a new spliter on the main line and i dont remember having any problems since then, i dont know how that helps you...

Yeah, I hate AOL, but that's what my landlord uses, so no choice really. I can't really mess with anything on the DSL end, just the router is mine. I'm currently on channel 6, but that should only affect the wireless. When the internet craps out, I can't connect on his computer that is connected to the router via a lan line either.

As shipped, the Linksys firmware crashes under heavy peer-to-peer network traffic, such as BitTorrent. The reason for this crash is that Linksys has programmed the router to keep track of old connections for five days. This five day limit quickly overwhelms the router when there are a high number of network connections, such as with BitTorrent, and can only be resolved by power cycling the router. Hmm, possibly. uTorrent does seem to be a culprit some of the time, but just now I didn't even have it loaded - I was playing MxO and the connection crapped out on me.

Well, I followed the advice in that link and downloaded the alternate firmware. I got it setup and working properly, so now only time will tell if it fixes my problem. I've started up uTorrent just to test it out.

I am currently having the same problem with the wireless gateway here at the house. And to say that we have heavy P2P traffic is an understatement. The most annoying part is that since the oruter is in my room, if the internet goes down in the middle of the night, someone comes and bangs on my door till I reset it.

My 2 cents...

Are you folks useing the DHCP server on the routers? If so, you might want to think about switching yourselves to a static IP behind those routers, I remember haveing that trouble before long ago before I had my current connection, which if I reveal the specs will make most of you want to hunt me down and hurt me, sufficed to say that I had to start useing statics and it stop from droping 4 times a day to once every four days (and that's because the modem doesn't like to auto refresh it's IP)

not necessarily saying this is the problem... but ive had a similar experience in the past.  Basically my internet would cut off and back on at times and when it was on sometimes it would run very very slow.  The problem ended up being that the network ethernet cable crapped out on me.  I replaced the cable from my computer to the router and all was well again.

Tbone is on wireless so thats likely not the issue, unless its the cable pluggin in the modem to the wan port.

yea, and I'm using a cable gateway, so the cable's not the issue for me either. The only way to fix the problem is to power cycle.
