Smartphones (or phones in general)
« on: September 20, 2006, 01:02:01 pm »
Post up your smart/normal phone specs and any details about it.

My phone is the verizon xv6700. (Sprint also has the same phone, anmed the PPC-6700, and has a silver cover)
For a review and spec sheet, go here: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/Verizon-XV6700.htm

This is a techies dreamphone. While the treo series is great for one handed business use, moderate excessive use, and light processor loads, the xv6700 is meant to be poked, prodded, and above all else - tweaked. I own both phones, and think the treo is no match for the xv6700. They say that the treo700w is if you want a phone first and a PDA second, while the xv6700 is a PDA/computer first, then a phone. It runs Windows Mobile 5.0, which I have grown to love. The very first thing I did with this thing was to put a reg editor on it. There are many registry hacks you can perform that will noticably speed up this phone. Also it will unlock some things verizon blocks (bluetooth tethering/wifi and phone enabled at the same time ect...) After that it was off to sites like pdaphonehome.com to get all the latest and coolest programs for it. The Today screen is the main "desktop" area of the phone that is always up.
My Today Screen:

Here is a list of what the programs I'm running, starting with what's always displayed on my today screen:

Treo700w-LIKE Picture Speed Dial
I forget the actual name of this, I found it on pdaphonehome.com. It displays pictures of my contacts and allows me to just smash my thumb into thier face and it will call them. Much better than a lookup technique.

Agile Messenger
Allows me to connect to AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, XMPP, and Google chat services. Best one I've ever used. On the today screen it displays users online, and how many messages I've missed.

SBSH.net PocketWeather
Offers many display modes to see the next 5 days weather for any given city.town in the world. I have it connect to the internet every hour to update. I have mine set to display 5 day forcast pictures and hi/low temps with % of rain, along with current situations.

Cai Systems cLaunch
Good lord I can't live without this. This I consider a small section to be my typical "desktop" area on a windows machine. It allows you to put icons to open other programs up on your today screen and arrange them within tabs. Currently I have 5 tabs with the following program links: "Main" (GSPlayer, Link to Pictures, Link to Calendar, Notes-basicly notepad), "Com" (AgileMessenger, wmIRC), "Games" (PDASudoku, Tetris, Solitare, TextTwist), "Util1" (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,Screen Capture), "Util2" (RegEdit, TotalCommander, Dictionary Editor, Calculator).

Other programs:
PHM Reg Editor
This was the first program I put on. Allows me to tweak my phone just how I like it.

TransCreative Magic Button
This was the second program I put on. Normally when you hit the X in WM5, it only 'minimizes' the window. This eats up memory and can cause issues. The main thing MB does is allows that X to close the program completely out of memory. It does more than that though. It also allows you to switch between programs using a taskbar and alter the way programs interact with that taskbar. Absolutly a necessity.

C. Ghisler & Co. Total Commander
Now this is a true workhorse...It's primary purpose is a file explorer. It is much more involved than the basic one in WM5. It allows for virtual and real split screens (perfect for FTPing and copying). I beleive it also came with a zip program allowing you to unzip .zip files right on your phone. sidenote: WM5 on it's own will only support .cab compressed files, not .rar or .zip. My main use is to connect to my FTP while on the go. It's simple to setup, and very easy to use functionally.

GreenSoftware GSPlayer
The best audio software for this thing. I'm not sure, but it may also be able to do video. The xv6700 comes with windows media, but it's main drawback is that it does not allow for streaming music. GSPlayer allows me to stream music from the internet and also virtually lock my phone and shut off the screen to save battery. It has a full feature set including an adjustable EQ, playlist display, and a few other toys.

Games
Tetris, Sudoku, TextTwist...All good stuff

Flash
Macromedia does have a version of flash for WM5 phones, so I got it.

wmIRC
IRC Client. Nuff said.

LogMeIn Remote Control
This isn't realyl a program you run, it's more of a plugin/certificate. It allows me to connect to my computer at home FROM MY CELL PHONE and control it completely. This is real remote desktop, nothign text based or anything like that, I get a full image of my desktop at home on my phone. I've used this before to jump on WoW to chat to people. The framerate isn't enough to play, but to get on and say hello to the guild it's nice.

Dictionary Editor
When typing, this gives you option on word that you may be trying to type. It will actually learn the way you type the more you use it. This program allows you to edit the dictionary and omit words you won't want suggested.

Fann Software Capture Screen
Allows me to capture a .bmp of my phone. This is what allowed me to take that pic of my today screen.

Other Stuff:
Mail
I have it's mini-outlook mail client setup to get my 3 gmail accounts. It's nice. =)

1.3 MP Camera
It's a decent camera. It's a great camera for a phone. Takes pictures, panoramic pictures, sport pictures, MMS pics, Video in 3 different formats including a separate setting for MMS video.

Screen
Better than the Treo, no doubt. The extra space is desperately needed when you have techie needs like me, especially with picture dialing. The touchscreen pressure is just fine. This has more than enough room for me to move around with my thumb.

Keyboard
Hidden when I don't need it, pops out quickly when I do. I can not stand normal phone keyboards, so having a full qwerty board is perfect for me. Most people on AIM don't realize or beleive me when I tell them I'm on my phone.

Mini SD Card
It was a stupid idea not putting in a full sized SD Card, but whatever...I deal. I got a 1GB mSD and love it. I mainly store my movies and music on it.

Internet
I tried using Opera on this thing for a while, as it is my browser of choice on PC, but really it didn't compare to the IE version in WM5. I normally love the way Opera(PC) integrates tabbed browsing, but it wasn't done on this phone well, even with magic button. It also ate a ton of memory, so I decided to give it the boot. With Magic Button, IE works wonders.

Ringtones
Forget about buying them, I make my own. You will like my current ringtone: http://fuse.gotdns.com/Phone/!Back2U-Ring.wma

Phone
Almost forgot about this part. The phone is nice and full of function. No complaints from me. Of corse I had to change some things up and change the skin.

http://fuse.gotdns.com/Phone2/!DIR.asp  - a basic set of programs to get a phone started. I used this as a start for my wifes Treo700w
http://fuse.gotdns.com/Phone/!DIR.asp - Has all of those, plus a ton more. basicly this is where I stored my setup files as I added them to phone, saw if I liked them, and kept or deleted them.
It may be down if I turn off my server machine...

So, What's yours?

A Motorola i710. I'm too poor to buy myself a new phone, and my dad wants us in on a "family" plan, so anything but Nextel is out of the question for the next two years because my dad doesn't want to change his phone number.

Fuse.... the resolution on your camera phone is higher than on my digital camera.... I officially hate you.

My specs? Black samsung thing... my boyfriend let me have his old one to use....seing as mine died.... and I mean dead. The speaker was going out (you had to hold the fliptop part exactly right to hear someone) and the camera function stopped working.... that was all before I threw it at my boyfriend. He ducked, the phone hit the wall and smashed into like 5 pieces.

Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

Oh, but we can't change our number. We tried.

My dad bought his cell-phone way back in 1999 about two months before we moved to Michigan. He got the 970 area code before we moved, activated, and he's had the number ever since. Because our billing zip code differs with the area code, he cannot change providers, says T-mobile, Sprint (even though they're together with Nextel), Verizon, Cingular, Alltell, etc.. We COULD technically do it, except we'd have to go out to Colorado and activate it there, have the billing zip code there for a month, and then "move". We even had trouble just getting him on a family plan within Nextel, though, so I don't know how successful that would be.

Nextel sucks. I hate it. The worst service and phones ever.

Hmmph.... switching from Cingular to Verizon just took calling an 800 number and the old account number.

The only reason we can't is because the billing address does not match up with the area code, and that, for some reason or another, causes them problems. :(
