TPNS....... challenge?
« on: July 23, 2006, 12:03:04 pm »
Speaking with Woodgrain the other night revealed some interesting news (Commander, this is aside from my security report).  He informs me that his "challenge" will be online soon for his new recruits.

It's no secret that design-wise, aspects of TPNS' site mirror our own.  They also interview through Teamspeak, which is understandable.  However it is also no secret that recruits in TPNS have existed in FA previously and could easily have been passing on information such as the structure of our riddles.  The idea of a challenge to enter a faction, to my knowledge, has always been unique to the Furious Angels.

If TPNS do this, surely others will follow?  Would this cast doubt over the authenticity of FA?  Or suggest we have splinter-factions rising from our own?  There is of course nothing we can do to prevent him organizing his website (I have checked his forums out, there is nothing of interest there), but it's surely something we should closely monitor.  Especially if the mainframe they will inevitably use looks somewhat like ours...?

Personally I think it's nothing to worry about really. I'll start to worry when I visit the site and it says "Welcome to the Furious Angels". If they do go ahead with this then I agree with Destyn, monitor the situation, but saying that I can see people going "Hang on, I've seen this kind of thing before" soooo /shrug ; /ballet

The biggest difference I see is that FA is well established, while his faction is not.

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery.  Woodgrain has been sucking up to us ever since he was kicked out.  Some of his replies to our recruitment thread are high-larious.  I really don't think he's trying to usurp our standing in the faction application department.  He just wants to be on par with us as much as he can.

Most well-known factions these days have some kind of recruitment process.  Faction applications, TS interviews and the like.  I think everybody has kept away from mimicking the FA recruitment model because they're afraid of looking like copy cats, which is probably how this will be viewed.

But I think this was inevitable.  If TPNS hadn't done it, somebody else would have.  But it goes back to the copy cat thing.  The long standing players and factions know that FA was the first to literally challenge applicants if they wanted to join.

I think we should take a look at Woodgrain's recruitment challenge and see exactly how it compares to ours.  If it's pretty much a carbon copy, then we'll certainly have to have a talk with him.  Otherwise, I don't think there's much we can do about it.

Personally, I don't think they will be able to put together a good enough copy for it to matter... secondly.. I seriously doubt Woodgrain would copy our riddle or anything.. some of his factionmates might... but who knows.. he never got far enough into the faction to even make it past his trial... so he doesn't know the inner working behind the challenge to begin with..

My worry was that they would do a direct copy of it, based on what we've seen so far.  And that would really suck for the people who put a lotta hard work into the original ;)
