Gah... choosing a major has never been so stressful....
« on: April 20, 2005, 01:37:13 am »
Well..... kinda similar to Zink's thread about choosing a major, The time has come for me to decide which career to strive for. The reason why I am posting this is simply because I have multiple talents and multiple interests in a wide variety of fields. I've been giving it some comprehensive thought and am boiling it down to just three fields....

1. I love astronomy. Anything that has to do with the universe has my interest (except cosmology and astrology). One thing I know I can't do is sit at an observation tower analyzing data.... There are a few other jobs in the astronomy field, and although I enjoy astronomy, I don't think I would enjoy the job fields..... (I interned at my campuses observation tower (Rio Hondo's obs tower = largest PUBLIC obs tower in southern california) and although it was fun watching the moon cycles and observing the moons revolve around Jupitor, it was boring doing everything else).

2. I LOVE anything that has to do with computers. I originally thought software programming would be an ideal job.... but one course with C+ and I knew that is not the field for me. I also love music, so I was thinking of mixing the two together and maybe choose a career in the music industry (music studio, heck even an equipment tech for a band). I have been in a music studio before and even created an album with my band. It was fun but I wan't to be sure before I make my choice.

3. The movie industry...... heck even theatrical arts intrigues me. I took a drama class (not a full on theatrical arts class) and I can act..... but I am definately no Tom Cruise. I'm not considering acting... but I am looking at some jobs related to the production of a play/film. Cinematography sounds good, as I like to create short films... But again I'm not sure. I'm even thinking of doing anything on set (wouldn't want to be the boom guy though lol =P). Because I live 30 mins from L.A. It sounds like an ideal field to at least look into (heck might even try to intern).

Well these are my interests tightly compressed into three categories. The reason why I posted this is because I know quite a few of you are aspiring to get into some of these fields (if not already) and would like some advice. I would appreciate it if you guys could leave feedback or answer some things like "why I decided I wanted to become a director, or actor" or "what I like about the field I'm going for and what I dislike about it".

Gah, sorry i'll end this post now, but if you can't tell, I'm kinda stressed so I'm looking for whatever advice I can get lol.

I'm specializing in Computer Science and minoring in Philosophy.

Greatest combination :D

EDIT: My advice: go into anthropology because hot girls take that.

EDIT: My real advice: To be honest, everyone goes through that phase. It takes time to figure it out. One thing that helped me was this: think about what you won't be bored of in 20 years. I initially wanted to be a lawyer, but you know, a lawyers life doesn't apeal to me. I would go insane after 10 years of that. I also looked into graphic design and animation, but ya I just loved programming more.

EDIT: And I minored in philosophy to release me from all that math and typing. Just to balance things out in my life.

You think choosing a major is bad? I graduate in a year! Then I have to get a job!

By the way, I chose acting. Choose movies and then you can get me a job! Heh...

Ok, well Im gonna leave the CS part alone, because you've heard all of that beofre.  As far as astronomy majors go, It's alot of theoretical physics stuff.  Likewise, unless your contracted by NASA or something, the money's not great.

Film/Acting:  I have been acting For about four years now.  I have done three plays, all for my college, and I have directed and acted in two films, currently working on getting my biggest project off the ground now.  Acting and film making is addictive, but it's gonna take some serious dough if you want to major in it.  What I mean to say is that the most respected film schools are very pricy.  Look around if you are interested in Studying either, but I reccomend majoring in something you'll enjoy (I dont know for a fact with you, but perhaps video game Development, or CS.  Let movie makng be a hobby, cause in college you really do have nothing but time.  Even when you're busy, a fourth of your day is spent doing nothing.  Use that time to pursue acting of film

LOL

i happened to choose a major and a minor where neither will make me rich. teacher and musician. what the hell was i thinking!?!?

well, at least i finally own my own horn **looks at the incredibly large dent in savings** DAMNIT ....

p.s. no matter what job you get, learn to sing and girls will swoon. no joke. :p

p.p.s. in all seriousness, do what you love most. just pick one and run with it. if it turns out to be something that you're not too thrilled with after the fact, move it to a minor and switch to the next best thing. yeah, it might take a while, but if you have to take an extra few semesters of classes to be absolutely sure that's what you want to do with the rest of your life, it's worth it! :)

Take a bunch of stuff and find out what you like, and if that doesn't work try again. You might go all the way through loving one thing get into the rl world and do something else but it doesn't matter just make the most of the time you're there. Don't think this is what you have to do, don't think this is what you will do. Just find something you enjoy doing and go for it. Whats the worst that can happen? Nothing you can't change or fix.

Its all about the film.  I think the best way you should go about getting into Cinematography is by getting a Communications major and then heading somewhere that specializes in your field.  So like im going Communications then after my three or four years of college im going ot the Los Angeles Film School.

Try not to stress over it to much. It is hard to say what will or will not work for you once you get out of class and into the job market. Just pick something you think you will enjoy and run with it. Like Tivod said, "what's the worst that can happen? Nothing you can't change or fix."
