I know we're not supposed to talk about it if we have beta or whatnot, so if this post shouldn't be here, just delete it. But let's say for the sake of arguement that I had Beta and that everytime I try to load one of the worlds, it freezes on a black screen. Anybody else had this problem and been able to solve it?

I've always been a little worried that my computer might not be able to run the game since it's about 3 years old now and on the back end of the requirements for the game. I tried updating my vid drivers to no avail.

Also, my little brother (hypothetically speaking of course :D  ) got the game running on his computer, but the only problem he has is that there is no cursor. He has to guess where his mouse is on the screen. The game reacts to his clicking on the mouse buttons, but like I said, he just can't see it.

Wow, I have no clue...Sorry Goob. It could just be the buggyness that is MxO beta, and not your system. Bring it up on the beta forums.

The mouse problem means that your video card is under par and the black screen problem is probably because your ram is too low. The same things happen to me.

Other possible reasons:
Right click on your desktop, go to properties, go to settings, click advanced, click on trouble shooting, make sure the slider is all the way to the right.

As for black screens, you may be connecting to a bad hardline, or not have the latest drivers or directX.

You might try again next month, there's going to be a big patch and there may be some fixes that address your issue.

Not being able to see your mouse pointer or not being able to move your mouse pointer can usually be solved by running in windowed mode.

Edit the shortcut properties and after make it:

 "...launcher.exe" +windowed 1

and that should solve the mouse problem.

Oh sweet, I didn't know there was a Beta forum. I passed the information along to my little bro about the mouse problem. He was about to go to bed, so he said he'd try the windowed mode tomorrow and let me know if that solved the problem.

As far as my black screen, well, I may just give in and upgrade my computer when MxO comes out. I could use some more RAM for sure and my video card is like a GForce 2 or something. I knew I was gambling the dice by trying to see if I could get the game to work on this computer.

Yeahh....that was a big oops on my part. Somehow you got left out of the permission group for the Beta forum. Not quite sure how that happened...

The black screen you get upon choosing your hardline and attempting to jackin in is because the area the hardline is in that you chose is down.  This has been happening lately because the region server can't quite handle all the people in the noobie area's.(yes that's right, it has nothing to do with your ram, everyone gets the dreaeded black screen of death one time or another ^_^ )

^^ What Itachi said.

The server for that area has crashed.
This will also affect you if you jack into an area successfully, then walk into the region that was crashed.

Just ALT-F4 (or wait like 5 mins for the game to shutdown), and restart. Then choose a different HL.

Oh, btw - I've found that if I crash or ALT-F4, the launcher (where you type in your username and pass) is very slow  next time you try to log in (the update goes to 100%, but it takes its time to check). If, instead of logging in, you close the launcher and run again - you will find it runs quicker.

I assume this affects the entire game - I'm thinking that if you close the launcher using the close button, it clears memory.

Well guys, I thought that might be the problem as well. That the server might just be going down. So I caleld up my bro and asked him to try and log in right after I did and he was able to. I then tried again and just got the black screen again. We did this two or three times a few hours apart and it happened every time.

And no problem T-Bone about not adding me before. :)

Well, it IS possible that you could have a  hardware problem of some kind I suppose. I wouldn't expect a blackscreen tho. I would expect a proper crash.

It is a bit strange I suppose with your testing, but some areas like MARA go up and down like a cheap whores knickers.

When you select your hardline and then press the JACK IN button, first it tries to connect to server (ie make sure its up), then it loads the "loading" screen (the computers in the background), then it tries to connect fully.

The black screen occurs because you are trying to reach the server and its not responding. Leave it for 5 - 10 mins, and a message "should* appear. If you really think its not the server, then its more likely to be a communication problem, ie the beta server IP has been blocked by your ISP!! Can't imagine so however. A hardware error would not crash here as there is no real hardware stressing - no loading, its just internet communication at the "black screen" point.

Of course once you get the correct screen, then things load - any crashing here could be hardware.

I have made a petition that asks for them to have a timeout or some more user friendly info during this connect period (an escape option would be nice). You may have seen it on many games (especially FPS games) "waiting for connection...1" 1 counts up until you connect, or quit.

I had the same problem with the mouse, if you run it in windowed mode it will work.
