I've created a topic on the official beta boards concerning Chat Bubbles and an inovative new way of looking at ingame-email. Please read the post, more importantly my second post in the same thread to get my full idea... And feel free to /sign off on it if you believe it will add both emersion, atmosphere, and function. Sev, there have already been long posts about chat bubbles.

I disagree with the chat bubble concept. I think its comic-booky (probably because they have them in City of Heroes) and wouldn't have the right feel for MxO. I do agree that the current chat system isn't working, though.

Perhaps you could just have the text hovering above someone's head for a set amount of time, even if you don't read it above their head's you would at least know that they have typed something. I agree with Muse that chat bubbles would kind of ruin the whole style of the Matrix.
MxO may be similar to CoH but chat bubbles is just one step too far heh... 4 hours to go...

My purpose was to inspire thoughts on my EMAIL idea, the chat bubbles are a means to break down communication barriers.. I gurantee you'd like those bubbles more than the current setup.. I'm not saying that bubbles are the way to go.. Just give me something better. Try to catch my points.. I don't give a shit about bubbles. It's the email that has my attention.
