Radio for the Gamers!
« on: June 01, 2010, 06:55:19 am »
Im currently looking into broadcasting a live radio feed for the sheer purpose of the furious angels and other gamers outside the FA. Why you may ask? well its down to two simple things.

1. Dont you get sick of listening to your own music whilst playing games, sometimes you want a taste of what other people are listening to. Or stop there and listen to some of the new albums that are out there  :roll1:

2. Advertisement through a radio broadcast is a great way to get more followers into the FA.

q. Will it cost you or me anything?
a. No it won't cost the FA anything its free to broadcast and listen too

q. What songs are we going to listen too?
a. All new and old albums from any category or sub category music

q. Will there be a chance to request or vote for music to be played live?
a. ofc aslong as i am watching the broadcast feed i can recieve requests.

q. will the sound quality be different to the original sound quality (for example cd quality)
a. There might be some anomalies due to the streaming but not really that noticable

q. great! when will this start?
a. whenever you think its a good idea to!

give me a Yay or Nay if you think its a good idea.

Umm, are you my twin? When I hosted FA Radio years ago that's exactly what my playlist looked like too. =)

What kind of server is this running off of, and have you tweaked sc_serv.ini? The buffer seems really bad with only one listener at 56kbps, so a station isn't possible unless you've messed up the optimization. Also quality isn't going to be so great at 56kbps.

We've dabbled in this before, but it didn't get much traction - possibly because of the server limitations on my line as well; and also because we didn't have much content to deliver to the masses. By masses, I mean to people outside of FA, otherwise it's kind of pointless, IMO.

I've DJed for five stations, and managed one of those. Despite not being into it for a long while now, I still keep SAM installed always.

Because it the server is static i suppose there really shouldnt be that much buffer.
This is running off my personal DNS server with 6 proxy's one of them being in America posing a T1 Connection.
I can change the Bit rate directly from winamp ill go through that. What would you say 128kbps or 256kbps both stereo obviously.

If i was your twin id probably know if i had the static server on lock... seems that its not static atm but im going to phone up the proxy owners and get that sorted then it can be a continuous stream... here is the one im going to be running all night and tomorrow for a test

128 is preferred unless you have the bandwidth to spare for 198. I can't really think of a situation where 256 isn't overkill.
I'm a bit surprised it's running a T1, as it's very choppy to begin with - though it may just be me.

Going back to the poll (I'm not voting in it) I think it really depends on need and content.

Well ive sorted out the Static IP wit the Proxy Net staff today, the choppyness might be due to before i was connecting through my computer here to the Proxy in america but now i have direct VPN access so now i can host it without stringing off my bandwidth.  Down to need a content if people could tell me what kind of music they would like to hear ill get the torrents out and start downloading. But at the same time it would be a mixed ratio of music to satisfy everyones needs.

People get telling me what music you would like to hear and ill get the station ready for next monday to go live.

I'm always interested in new content.

Would the server be up 24/7? Could there be different DJs? What would make people want to listen to this rather than their Itunes or another radio station?

We have a few ways of getting the broadcast out - the website, facebook, TS. I want to see what the interest is like first, though...and how many of you are interested in trying to get it running...and what sort of applications it could be used for.

I've always thought for FA specific events it is a great, and unique, tool - but getting players to actually care enough to listen for more than a few minutes is difficult unless it's a 24/7 thing. Hell, even then it's difficult unless it's unique.

I have some experience with this, so could help quite a bit.

Hey sorry ive been gone for a few days to respond. Let me start off by saying ive just changed the server settings to make a constant feed and also a static i.p so the answer to the first question would be "yes" it would be 24/7 broadcasting.

As to there being different DJ's depending on if you know how to use shoutcast and obviously show a keen attitude to broadcast yourselves on the radio, also a biggy make sure you dont play any songs that might conflict the terms and conditions. Then yes different DJ's would be a great idea.

What makes it different from listening to Itunes?. Well ive already put in the Q & A what makes it different, but ill explain for you. Basically you might not have every song in the world and you might like to hear something different for a change whilst involved in your game. This isnt excluding the possibility of sending the DJ a request song or genre to be played. And also whilst i was pondering around i thought of a great idea!!! which is to have game talk shows, with different dj's everytime to get reviews, comedy, and general gaming chat/banter out of the FA.

Cheers
