I figured all the old school guys would be interested in this.

A group of people have set up a free SWG server, running SWG Pre-CU.

It's still in development, so not everything is fully up and running yet. But the server is open and the game can be played. Certain components don't work, but are being worked on.

You download the the game through torrents. A buddy of mine finished the download yesterday and was in-game playing.

Nope, no monthly charge. It is a free server, not run by SOE.

I kept track of that project for a while. They kept restarting because they deemed their current build too slow, or unstable.

Good to hear they've finally settled on a build and worked to improve on it. I checked it out about a month ago and was impressed at how far they've come. I wouldn't mind playing a pre-CU version of SWG again myself, but I wouldn't want to play on their server yet. Basically, there's no economy yet from what I've seen. They have an NPC standing outside Theed that supplies you with composite armor and stuff right off the bat. I wouldn't mind it so much, but it takes away from the feel of the game to me...

Half the fun was collecting the stuff to start up some factories and pumping out armor and weapons for friends.

I miss the good ol' days.
