When trying to send an email, the message gets stuck in my queue folder, and the error I receive say's

Quote
Diagnostic-Code: smtp;550-5.7.1 [<My>] The IP you're using to send email is not authorized
550-5.7.1 to send email directly to our servers. Please use
550 5.7.1 the SMTP relay at yourservice provider instead. 16si4582997nzo

I've tried running smtp on a different port than 25, and also adding each outside IP that I'm aware of to my relay. Does anyone have experience with this, or know a way I can bypass my ISPs relay and simply use localhost?

Your ISP has to setup reverse DNS for the IP- range that they've given to your machine.  What's happening is that whoever your sending the email to is not allowing it because they use reverse DNS to make sure your email is coming from a legitimate source and not some mass e-mailing (blocked) company.  They can't make sure of that because your ISP doens't have reverse DNS setup.  Call your ISP and have them setup a PTR record for your IP and that should fix it.  It will take about 24 hours to propagate.

Yeah, I was afraid of that...That will kind of lead them to beleive I'm running my own server. They don't like that.

Question, do I have to specify what I want the reverse DNS record to contain/be? Or is it really as simple as "Hey, setup a reverse DNS looup for <IP>, thankskbye" ?

They wont think you're running a server just by asking them about reverse lookup, just say you're having trouble sending emails to AOL (AOL is big on using reverse DNS for authenticating email senders).

And all you need to tell them is this:

1. Having trouble sending to AOL
2. Called AOL and they told me that my ISP needs to setup a PTR (pointer) record for my specific IP/

What your ISP will do is create a DNS record on their servers that is a resolves the IP your email came from back to their legitimate domain name (like @yourdomainhere.net).
Done and Done.

I asked a few questions, and got back a reply of "errr, sorry, we can't do that unless you upgrade your account. I'll try that line...
