Video Problems
« on: August 26, 2006, 04:01:34 am »
As some of you know, my screen was flickering while playing MxO last night. Fuse recommended installing some Omega driver instead (curse you Fuse), which ultimately f'cked up my video driver settings. I got an error message with MxO and any other game.

So I uninstalled Omega crap, installed the newest ATI and STILL got the same error message. After some work in safe mode, I got the games working again, but the video quality is CRAP, no matter what settings I change in game or in my display settings. It started with MxO even having some crappy font. I managed to fix the font, but the video quality in basically anything involving DirectX is borked. Yes, I reinstalled DirectX as well. Still no luck. Anti-aliasing doesn't seem to work, as well as any other advanced feature. It seems to be reading my video card as a piece of shit, though the drivers are installed and it is reading Radeon 9800 XT.

What did I do wrong? How do I get my video settings back up to par?

Start Windows in VGA mode and remove all ATI drivers in case you have something conflicting there

(F8 on boot to access VGA mode)

Depending on what you have installed maybe even go back to an ealier restore point before you where having crappy video problems wich only sounds like a few days.

http://www.drivercleaner.net/professional.php

use this and clean up your drivers and try that again just to see if it works, there should be directions how to use that program it is kinda of a involved process involving you going into safe mode but it might help you....or it was what i was saying last night that your vid card is about to explode... :(

Sorry for the Omega Drivers messing with you. Are you sure you had the right ones? They were worlds beyond the ATI drivers when I had my 9600xt. Wish I could be there to fix it for you. I'd try another round of uninstalling the current driver, rebooting, downloading the newest ATI driver (just the driver), installing, and rebooting.

Well, I went back to a restore point of two days ago. I haven't had time to test and see if it changes anything. At least I can play! I wonder if at least the flicker is gone....

Haven't had the flicker yet and graphics seem to be back to normal. *crosses fingers that it stays that way*

Results are bad. After switching to the Ngo (?) drivers AND exiting out of Active Desktop Calendar, the flickering/blinking continues to be a problem. I'm quickly running out of options...

Ok, so maybe I fixed it. Using a refresh rate fixer, I set both my monitors (I have two) to 60. That's when I found out that my second, smaller monitor was set at 75 while my main was set at 60. I think that may have been causing the problem. When I did set my smaller one to 60, it started shaking quite drastically (the screen, not the whole monitor). What I ended up doing is magically setting my smaller monitor's resolution to match my main's (1600x1200) and put them both at 60. This seems to have solved both the shaking and the flickering from what I can tell, though stuff is a little smaller then I'm used to on my secondary. I'll keep gaming some more and see if the flickering comes back.

Scratch that. I'm still getting the blinking. It took about an hour or so of gameplay, but it finally started happening.
