Verizon?
« on: July 08, 2012, 11:52:10 pm »
After putting up with shotty connections and frequent disconnects, I contacted Verizon on my own about getting a freakin router upgrade for our Verizon FioS. Turns out they're scamming us.

You can ONLY use Verizon FioS routers, so my Wireless N router won't work. They won't GIVE me an upgraded router - I have to BUY it. For $115.

This guy.

Now certain cities qualify for an exchange/trade in program apparently, but mine does not.

So do we have anyone who works at Verizon? Anyway to get this thing cheaper? It's a little ridiculous that I can't use my own router...

You should be able to use any router you want to as long as it's connected physically to an open port on the Verizon modem/router. You just have to tell the router (via it's software interface) to not dynamically assign IP addresses. Also I believe you have to use a port other than the WAN, so you lose an Ethernet port turning your router into a switch.

Granted this doesn't solve internet connectivity issues if the modem they provided is poo-poo (which I feel they should be able to swap for an equivalent model for FREE). I'm assuming it would be the modem causing problems as running fiber to the house is a pretty darn stable setup.
If all the world's problems were solved today, what would you have left to do tomorrow?

I've already connected a different router to the Verizon router to improve the WiFi, but the router still crashes out when there's any significant increase in traffic, and since my router is porting through that one, it all shuts down.

Well, I blew up the Internet. After my frequent disconnects, I tried bridging the thing, which just fucked everything up. Next thing I know I'm on the phone with tech support for 5 hours. By the end of it I had ripped apart my ONT box outside, they had disabled my MoCa coax Internet and enabled an imaginary Ethernet port that apparently doesn't exist. I found myself on the phone with bumbling idiots who literally just breathed into the phone for 5 minutes mumbling they had no clue what to do.

Needless to say, I have no Internet. They want to charge me $80 to send out a technician after they led me into this mess. And I still can't get anyone to even offer a router replacement.

Fuck Verizon.

Verizon's service was never good... then it got worse around the time of their most recent strike.

Sorry to hear you are having so many issues man. Hopefully you can get it sorted out soon. Ill cross my fingers for you.

So I'm back at square one. The internet is back up, but I'm still using the old crappy router. The good news is that they are sending me a replacement router, though it's basically the same one. I currently have a Rev. D router and they are sending a Rev. F. I did find these differences:

The NAT table size went from 7500 to 30,000.
The rev. F has a dual core processor.
The rev. F has draft 802.11n.

I'm hoping the small NAT table was my main problem, so this should solve that. Also having the wireless-N band would allow me to have a more stable connection to the primary router, even if it's "fake" wireless-N (it can't get 300mb/s).

Good news everyone! Verizon ended up sending a revision I router, which actually supports wireless N with two antennas. I'm now rocking a "Good" connection with 130Mbps (not 300, but better than previous). The NAT table is also something like 200k, so if that was the problem, I should be golden. I guess only time will tell!

It passed the torrent test. I was downloading at 2.8MB/s and TOR didn't skip a beat. My browsing also didn't slow down. Should be good to go!
