Work PC
« on: May 11, 2011, 06:06:04 pm »
My dad wants to buy a new PC for work. Obviously he doesn't use it for gaming or anything like that, but at the same time he said he wanted it "future-proofed". I use IBuyPower, but obviously that's for high end performance. What would you recommend for my dad?

Does he want an all in one or a desktop?

Here's what he sent me:

Quote
My computer was built in 2002.  I'm considering upgrading.  Here are my current specs:

Intel Pentium 4 2.00 GHz, 1.25 GB Ram, 37.2 GB Hard Disk (1.77 GB free), Vista 32-bit.(what a hog), No video card, CD-W (never used). DVD (not used)

Pretty sad, huh?

Since I may keep my next computer for 10 years, what should I look for (specs) to get me to 2020?  What would you buy today?  What are your specs?
Any other recommendations would be appreciated.  Laptop, yes/no?  Flat screen monitor?  Dual monitors?  Video card with 3D?   Surround Sound?  I'm kinda getting carried away now.  You know what I'm asking.

Obviously he was joking about dual monitors, 3d, etc. I believe.

I build my own computers from newegg.com so I could recommend the actual equipment but not so much for manufacturers. I hate dell though and if I were to buy a laptop it would be an HP.

I'm sure you know power and what to look for but I'm gonna give my 2 cents anyway.

Def get at least a quad core processor or higher. 4gb of ram will last quite a while. Any higher is just gravy. 1tb of hard drive space gives you enough space to last many years depending on use. I have so much on my computer its ridiculous and I've only used 1.7tb of space. It took me 2.5 years to do so. An average user wouldnt get to even 500gb in 2 years. If you are going custom I recommend ASUS motherboards. They're solid and have great customer support. In terms of the processor I highly prefer AMD because of the value. You spend very little and get quite a lot.

Since you are looking for pre-built computers I'm pretty much of no help lmao. I could go on about types of cases, cooling options, etc.

I've been building computers for about 9 years now and the price is just so great. I built my computer I'm on now 2 years ago for 1100 dollars and its still stomping computers now. Going to be doing a rebuild this summer though to get ready for swtor.

Looks pretty "future-proof" to me, and should definitely be formidable for a while.

Funny that he doesn't game, because that would even make a decent gaming computer.

My work computer, like all the other computers in this office, is an HP and I've never had any issues with it.

Tbone, looks like if you order the same computer through HP, you can save a couple hundred dollars if you don't need the 27" monitor.  $900 with no monitor,  $1230 with the same 27" monitor, and of course less if you want to go with a smaller monitor.

Plus $50 off if you use the coupon code 50DEALZON.
