No, I don't feel a grind at all.

Today I created a team and invited 3 other guys. We dominated our district the entire play session, eventually getting an email from the game giving us a reward for reaching the top of the "League" (every day/week/month/year keeps track of the top players and those players get rewards).

The game is soooo fast paced. It's only a few seconds after one mission is done that another mission is presented to you. You can ignore that and go back to the mailbox/ammo dispenser, but for the most part you can just keep doing the missions. You're goal isn't to see how fast you can do it so that you can grind up faster. Your goal is to dominate the opposing team that's called in to stop you or that you are trying to stop. It was sooo much fun having a team to go with. My entire team was smart and friendly, and it wasn't long before we were gelling so much that the game APBed 7 people to try to stop the four of us (I'm guessing because our notoriety had gotten so high). We still won against 7 people. Why? Well, if you are in a group of 4 people working as a team, you have a much better chance than 7 people that the game threw randomly together for one match. So grouping up matters! Can you just imagine the game throwing together nearly all the criminals in the district to take on our merry band of FA?! Mad fun!

I got the sense that the nuisances really made for some unique team play. For instance, one guy had an ability that turned his car into an ammo dispenser, so he was our driver. I had a rapid-fire, anti-vehicle gun and a stun gun, so I was either first line of defense, taking out their cars while they were still trying to get to us, or arresting them one by one to buy us more time. Another guy was using a grenade launcher for crowd control. It's quite thrilling to have all four of your teammates piled into one car, leaning out the windows racing towards an objective or enemy!

The missions themselves get repetitive quickly - spray over graffiti, collect and deliver, etc. etc. But the mission objectives don't matter - it's keeping the opposition out of the way that keeps it exciting!

At the end, all of the guys I was teamed up with had a blast. I directed them to our website, so maybe they'll be interested in joining.

The more I play, the more I like it. It does have a GTA feel, so imagine all the bloodlust in the game directed towards PvP instead of pedestrians (though you can kill lots of pedestrians as well). Running over people is a blast! Reigning fire from down above is a blast! Trying out new guns and customizing your new vehicles is a blast!

I was so close to getting 5 notoriety, which would have set the entire district's criminals after me! Maybe next time!

Yeah, it just took me a while to get used to. I really think it could be the perfect sorta casual game that all of us can get into. You can group up regardless of level and come and go as you please without any sort of penalty. I hope you'll all like it.

Is there a crafting system currently in place for guns, cars, etc.?

Not that I know of. Guns and cars are unlocked as you earn achievements and level up. Once they are unlocked, you can purchase them for cash. There is a marketplace, however, where you can trade all your stuff. Next session I need to take a closer look and see how to trade things like custom-made symbols (so that if one of us creates a cool FA emblem, we can pass it along!)
