So a few weeks ago I started noticing that my laptop speakers didn't appear to be working. Playing around with plugging my headphones in, I realized the computer was reading that headphones were always plugged in. By half plugging my headphones in, I could get the speakers working (odd I know). In the process, I realized my mic port was no longer working at all (hence why I've been using my webcam's mic on TS). Now I've started to notice that sounds is starting to cut out on my headphones as well. One side (R side, I think) will cut out. I fear it won't be long before I have no sound at all, and that will be a very sad day.

So I did what I always do - I went to Dell online support. Only this time I realized my warranty is expired, so they won't let me do anything. Best I can do is to call them for them to tell me that my ports are messed up for a $40 charge (yeah, I already know that, thanks).

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the headphone/mic ports are damaged in some way. What's the cheapest way to get this fixed? Should I take my laptop to a local repair store? Should I somehow order new ports (can you do that?) and install it myself? Should I go through Dell and have them charge me for every step of the way?

You mean a new sound card through USB? I'm moving around a lot. The less extra things I have to take with me and plug in everytime I want to use my computer, the better. Are the ports connected directly to the sound card? So if I got a new sound card, that would also correct the ports?

If the ports are surface mounted on the motherboard then you will need to unsolder the old one and solder int he new one (most repair shops charge about 150.00 to do that). You can also check the solder points to see if it just a connection issue (which a little solder would fix).

 If it is a card, then you can replace it (just pay attention to how you open the laptop, so you put it back together correctly). Most of the XPS laptops (which I believe you have..not sure) have the replacable card. You will need to check the website for the specs, or post here and we can check for you..
