Title: New Text Alert System: GroupMe
Post by: Tbone on October 15, 2012, 04:44:02 pm
Hello everyone,

So our old text alert system has self destructed, and we're using this opportunity to get set up on a new system. The new system is called GroupMe and is owned by Skype.

There's an app that can be downloaded for any smartphone, and I recommend using that. SMS also works for stupidphones. If you find you have the app and are still getting messages via SMS, simply go to the settings and disable the SMS alert option.

This group messaging system can also be used on the web at here (http://web.groupme.com). You can access this directly and find out more info by click ALERTS (http://followtheangel.org/index.php?module=HTML%20Pages&func=display&pid=6) to the left.

To join the group simply follow THIS LINK (https://groupme.com/join_group/2767245/XF5375). FOR SECURITY REASONS, YOU MUST SEND AT LEAST ONE MESSAGE IN THE FIRST SEVEN DAYS OF SIGNING UP TO STAY IN THE GROUP. Otherwise the system kicks you out. So once you get in, please send a message and say hello!

Again, don't abuse this system. It's not for general chatter - just for group-wide announcements. You can use it, however, to PM whoever you'd like. Let me know if there are any questions!

I have it installed but not sure what to do next. I don't think I received an invite to the group, I only received an email saying it was coming. I will still keep my eye out for it.

Tbone, it sends everyone a text every time someone is added to the group.  Someone was added to the group last night around 3amish.

Hmm, it doesn't do that for me. Do you have the app installed or are you getting it through SMS? It doesn't send me a notification when someone joins - only when they text.

If you have the smartphone app installed, open the settings and look for the "Enable SMS" option.  Toggle it off.  You will no longer receive text messages, and instead all notifications will go through the app itself.

For good measure, try disabling "New User Alerts" as well.  I have it switched on, but I never receive notifications of new users.  Even so, turning it off couldn't hurt.

I don't have the app.  I guess I'll install it.

For those of you like me who do not have a phone or want to remain anonymous. Here is what I recommend.

1. Sign up for a Google Number.

Being I did not have a phone and you need to have a number to get one. I used my mother's cell phone to activate it. I then proceeded to block everything that would go to her phone.

2. Sign up with GroupME.

Currently at this time Google Numbers can not receive the confirmation number needed by GroupMe. So you can do one of two things. Send an email into their support with your info. You should receive an email back saying it was fixed within 24 business hours. Or two create a 2nd account for immediate access and disable alerts(Do not turn on Office Mode as its Group Wide).

When I signed up with my original email/phone number it would not send me my confirmation number or let me change my phone number. So I signed up with a 2nd account using another email/Mom's number. I turned off alerts and saw office mode said something different and turned that on. I learned it stops all messages from going out to the entire group(Don't do that). I then sent an email into support(support@groupme.com) and got an auto-response back immediately. Within 24 hours it was under my correct email and phone number. I didn't think I received an email saying they fixed it until I checked my original/accounts email and it was in the spam folder. I hope this info helps.

I told Broin to do this but he still hasn't done it because he is lame.

I like it more than the last one.

: Maybe we should have 2 channels; one for game messages etc and one for just forum chatter. ;-) can we integrate this into the website? Those with the app could set the gen chan to less disruptive3am settings. Those with sms only dont have to sign up.

Only reason I suggest it isbecause  the website is not so easy on a smart phone. Easier to type a general trash talk message into groupme than the site.! Just a random suggestion! Mos def look into the integration tho
