Title: BF3
Post by: ExternalError on July 27, 2011, 09:32:24 am
so just thought id say I have been invited to alpha test the new battle field heres the email I got.

Hi xxxxxxxxx,

As one of our valued and trusted Battlefield players, we are happy to invite you to participate in the Battlefield 3 Alpha Trial. All the instructions you need to join are printed below.

We are inviting you specifically because we think you have a great interest in the Battlefield series, and because we think you understand the technical issues that might arise this early in a game's development cycle.

The purpose of the Battlefield 3 Alpha Trial is to do a number of server-related tests in preparation for game launch, including load testing our back-end. We are also looking to you to provide us with any feedback on the entire Alpha Trial experience.

Please note that this is not the Open Beta due in September, it's not the Beta promised to buyers of Medal of Honorâ„¢ Limited Edition and this is not a public demo. This is a highly tech-focused Alpha Trial that does not represent final quality of the game. Performance at this early stage of development will potentially be choppy and far from optimal, and we will bring the servers down at our leisure if needed. There will be periods of downtime and periods when we run tests that will negatively affect the performance on the Alpha Trial servers (leading to lag and rubber banding, etc.).

The available slots are limited, so make sure to redeem your unique Alpha Trial code before they run out (see instructions below).

If you choose to join this Alpha Trial, please do not publically post information, images, videos or your impressions of it. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave your feedback directly to us at DICE in the closed Alpha Trial forum we have set up specifically for this purpose.

The Battlefield 3 team and I here at DICE are looking forward to your participation.

Cheers,

Patrick Bach
Executive Producer, Battlefield 3

Don't like the launch system. I have to upgrade my drivers to play kinda annoying but not like I can play it anyway with my hand still in a cast.

I'm Veteran Level 7, and I got in without an email by simply going to the Alpha site.  Installing on Origin now!

https://bf3alpha.battlefield.com/index.php?id=1

If you have other games from the BF series, make sure you enter them here (under the "My Soldier" tab, select "Veteran", and enter information for the appropriate game):

Good luck!

I feel like MMOs are different.  Only until recently have I purchased an MMO through Steam.  I almost expect that an MMO has its own delivery system for patches and what not.  I purchased rift and DCUO through steam and they worked really well but I was honestly surprised they were even there.

This kind of leads up to another thing I guess.  Am I going to be required to use Origin?

Post by: Da6onet on August 09, 2011, 06:13:27 am
I think what this is really going to lead to is the need for a game management service that doesn't also deliver the content. In a way Steam already allows you kind of do this by adding "non-Steam" games to your game library and launching from there so you have the one-stop launcher and your friends can see what you're playing. If Origin behaves like Steam, even though the application is required to be open when you launch the game, you should be able to, in theory, link some executable to Steam as a non-steam game. When I tried launching UT2004 without steam, it force launched Steam, but I could still technically open the file without using steam. This isn't always the case though, when I tried it with Alien Swarm, in the game itself said "No Steam" and was unplayable, though once I opened Steam, I could still launch the game directly from the file directory.

But I digress... I eventually do see a application that would work with whatever content delivery program you used and consolidate it into a clean interface. Of course this all means we need more RAM, but that's cheap these days anyway.

To add insult to injury, for those who won't buy it as it isn't on Steam,

http://www.pcgamer.com/2011/08/12/battlefield-3-retail-copies-will-require-origin-to-play/

I shall certainly be holding off for a while, not least because BF games generally have a lot of bugs to begin with.  But, I reckon this will be the first big game to test Origin and the demands on it's service.

So my experience with playable frame rates is generally anything over 30. In which case I will be holding off on doing anything in the gpu department (5850 currently). That said, I'm hoping prices of the 6970 drop another $50 in 2012.

In the Beta! It's an open beta, meaning that anyone with Origin can download it at not cost whatsoever. Download speeds were freaky fast (I averaged 2 megs/s), so it only took about 30 minutes to download.

The game is certainly fun. If you're looking for something other than LoL to play (Arch/Setun/Broin/everyone else), GET THIS BETA!

I can't get the game to launch. The browser comes up and I pick a server and the game launches but it just sits there as a black screened window. Also I can't seem to add people to my friends list in the browser from origin. I am using chrome.

Ya, the people adding function doesn't seem to be working right now, as for the launching issues, are you sure you have all the proper files installed? When I first tried to play there was a little notification in the bottom left of the screen that said I needed to download additional things to run it.

Caspian = win

To really appreciate BF3 you have to play it for about an hour, then go back and play BC2 and have a "whoa" moment.

That said, in the interest of holding closer to high framerate in intense moments I will probably turn one or two settings down from ultra. I have to say though, getting killed never looked so good :-p

Tried setting up a proxy but the release date seems to be hardwired into the code for the game. Can't get past the release date check. Any advice?

Yeah... It's weird.  You start the game from Origin, then it takes you to a page in your browser where you decide whether you want to play Multi, Co-op, or Campaign.  You start the appropriate game mode from the webpage...  The setup is wonky.

Setup is definitely out of the norm, but i think it works very well integrated with its battlelog page.  From the same spot you launch the game, you can track stats, make parties who if join a game together get put in same squad, have access to forums for research/discussion and manage platoons (clans/guilds).

Although my favorite use is to keep track of my unlocks for what new piece of shiny I'm getting next.

Having some difficulties getting the game to run. Keep getting an error message telling me to reinstall. Tried that but same thing keeps happening. I think it may be because I don't have directx 11 installed. Now I'm having difficulties witt. I can't get directx 11 installed it keeps saying it's up to date although dxdiag says I have directx 10. Trying windows update now. Hopefully I didn't waste $60.

Started on the campaign mode last night. This game is stunning in its audio/visual effects. My wife did a double take because she thought I was watching a movie at first. The F-18 sequence had incredible attention to detail (even though I was just the NFO), I have to show my brother (F-18 pilot).

Yeah, I have it for 360, and when you first start up it asks you if you want to download the high-quality HD pack - about another 1.5gb. Looks amazing. I only played a bit of the campaign - I actually had problems getting past clearing tje area after the earthquake so switched to Multiplayer.

It's fun, but holy hell do I suck at MP. Still haven't really gotten the hang of flight mechanics on a controller.

I've gotten a couple of questions bout this to my battlelog, which i don't receive til i get home from work. The group of us are using voice chat, but not FA's TS due to lack of ability to use voice activation.  I run my own teamspeak3 server where we have myself and friends playing from about 5pm - 3am daily.  Hit me up on steam or in battlelog if you want that info.
