Found this in the Pre-order FAQ:
Why are supplies limited for pre-orders of Star Wars: The Old Republic?
BioWare has always had a history of delivering high quality experiences for our customers and we are dedicated to making sure that track record continues with Star Wars: The Old Republic. Our focus is on not only delivering a high quality game, but also in developing a thriving online environment. In order to ensure a great user experience we have decided to limit initial launch supply. Further supplies will be released post-launch.
Basically, once they hit a certain number on the pre-orders, you won't be able to get the game again until POST LAUNCH. In other words, it's definitely worth it to pre-order...NOW! Check our check-in thread for details!

Digital Deluxe on Origin is saying it is UNLIKELY you will receive your pre-order. In other words, sold out!
-
Holy shit. I wonder how many they've sold so far.
-

Gamestop appears to still be offering CE preorders:

Got my standard edition. Hope I get let in around the same time as you CE folks. if not, you'll have a few days on me :)
-
Wow, the CE is EXPENSIVE! I guess I will reluctantly buy the standard edition. :(
-
Ooh looks dope. I may have to join you guys after launch (which is saddening) but I've got no cash for a couple weeks.
-
If you preorder online it doesn't charge until it ships.
-
Got the collector's edition on order from Gamestop since BestBuy hadn't bothered to put any information on their site yet. I wasn't about to take the chance of them telling me after the order is made that they aren't including any preorder incentive.
-
psh stupid online thingies doesnt like danish people...have to go to the shop to preorder it *sigh* now I just need to find one of those, lol

Make sure they give you the code for the game you bought because gamestop was giving out the standard code to people who bought the collectors edition.
-
I've got an extra Online Pre-Order code if anyone is interested in it ... Its for the collectors edition so IDK if having that code will honestly allow anyone anything extra but who knows ... LMK if you are interested and can't afford to pick up your own reservation or haven't already done so
-
Still waiting for my code from game.uk. Promised it for next Thursday.
-
Registered and completed.
It won't be long now..
-
Well, it charges you the $5 for the preorder. But other than that...

"SWTOR Sets Pre-Order Record"
Electronic Arts said today its upcoming MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic is the fastest-selling pre-ordered title in the company's history.
The publisher did not provide an update on the game's release, however, only saying its targeted to launch in holiday 2011. Pre-orders for Star Wars: The Old Republic began last week.
EA's popular shooter, Battlefield 3, has seen pre-orders rise more than 10x Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
Wow...

For those curious about the CE store, it's actually a physical place in the game. In the center of Carrick Station, the main social hub the the Republic, there's a tower with elevators on four sides. Having CE grants you access to the elevators, which you can then ride up to the top and access the VIP section. Those without CE are rubber banded off the elevator.
-
Sweeeet! To bad for you suckers that dont have the CE heheh....
-
Nice... A place to get away from the little people. :p
-
It's like the Titanic!
-
I'll laugh my ass off if the VIP section is filled with bullshit microtransaction items.
-
^same
-
They already said the items would be bought with in-game credits.
-
I give it one year until they release a way for non-CE buyers to get in.

I remember when I earned the whole set by actually being in beta, jacket included.
-
They never did give away the burning eye trench though!

A year? You have much faith, sir. I give it a month or two.
-
It will never happen, however they may put in a Flea Market at the bottom for those that are unable to go up the elevator. :)

You, sir, underestimate the value of the almighty dollar.
Especially considering we are dealing with EA here.
-
Bah. I wish i'd have realized when I first preordered that I 1.) wouldn't have to use Origin to play SWTOR if I purchased the digital deluxe version and 2.) that they'd have an actual VIP bar in-game rather than just some crappy vender on my starship or something.
I'd really like to change to the deluxe version now but I already redeemed my preorder code on day one and don't want to lose my place in line.
The first time I decide against a colelctors edition because I feel I've been burned too many times in the past by crappy deluxe versions, and they go and make it worth my money. Ugggh.
-
I'm pretty sure they did state that the store was a physical location and that Origin was not mandatory to play.

Looks like it'll be available at launch. Beta has Cantina Vendors selling the VIP wristband for 1 million credits.
-
Incorrect. The wristband lets you go up the elevator but does NOT give you access to any of the special vendors.
-
I preordered mine a while back at GameStop.

Is it bad to pre-order through Origin? Are other vendors like Game Stop, etc. offering better perks?
-
Origin can burn in a fiery hell. I would always condone avoiding Origin at ANY cost. In fact I boycotted BF3 over it.

That seems a little harsh.
On a similar note, we're trying to find a way to get SWTOR to run on Steam. Currently you can load the game via Steam, but once the launcher closes and the actually game loads up, Steam thinks you've closed out and you lose the interface.
-

Thanks to EA for a cleaver bit of script code to deter the use of Steam and promote Origin usage ONLY.
-
No that's standard in all games with a launcher (mostly MMOs). The launcher closes when the game opens. It's the beta client, so I don't think EA has touched it yet.

Why? What is the scoop?
-
Because they are trying to compete with Steam and I hate EA, therefore I honor the 100x better product, Steam.

Yeah but there are several games I have that steam will work if the game has a launcher. It for sure works with wow.
-
I came up with a solution to this problem. Rename a program as SWTOR, then when you play SWTOR run the program so it keeps steam saying you're in the game.

I don't think that allows you to use the overlay does it? The overlay is the reason why you would want to use it with steam.

Update on My Status: Pre-ordered CE (as of thanksgiving day Best Buy still had some CE, but its been quite a while since then). Got my code taken care-of, and I am confirmed for the 5 day early launch (I called in and waited for 30 min, through people with their secret word thingy's, but I was told by someone at bioware that I am confirmed for the 5 days early, it seems most people will likely be there but I'm not sure). So I will see you all bright and late 12/14 :)

Yeah, it's a threading thing.
Steam needs to know about any child processes that may spawn from the parent. I guess there would be a config file somewhere for most game that have a "launcher" so that Steam knows to keep track; I would be surprised if the app attempted to monitor any processes that might be forked off since it doesn't recognise SWTOR is launched.
I had a quick look at the Steam directory, but can't see any plain text files that might contain this data; I did find some plain text files that looked like they had been "steam formatted", but I couldn't see that it tracked child launches.
I also checked the registry, but coudn't find anything that might do the job quickly. Perhaps some google searching might turn up some hacks for any game that Steam doesn't support. I guess people have looked at this in the past?

My guess is that any workaround my have issues any time the client is patched. Anyway, I guess we wont be able to test any solutions until 15th at least!
