Title: Brink
Post by: JP on April 27, 2011, 05:52:41 pm
Been following this game for quite awhile, and its being released in about two week was wondering what the interest level is here. My group of friends seem to be on board would love to get some FA action with this.
Most recent video showing off the game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yI0r9Pw1CB4&feature=player_embedded)

I'm a pretty big XBL gamer, and I am ALL about Brink. I went to their event at PAX, played a game and enjoyed it, and got a bitchin' rebel facemask for the effort.
That being said... Security all the way.

XBL? I think most of us will be getting this for the PC, gaming it up together on TS and Steam.
I'd encourage that route if at all possible :)
I love the look of the Security forces best for sure (although hard not to be sympathetic to the Resistance side!)
What side are people thinking? I'll go with the majority, either way gameplay has me pretty stoked.

$50 on Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/22350/)
In terms of sides, I'm leaning towards going Resistance atm but def like the look of Security better.

As much as I'd like to pick it up for PC, I'm likely going to get it for the 360. Alas, my PC is reserved for MMO's and games that can't be played on more reliable platforms.

If by reliable you mean worse, then i agree with you =D

So is everyone too busy playing to say anything about this game... cause its amazing... Has to be one of the best FPS games out there that really encourages and REQUIRES teamwork. You either move as a unit, support each other or you lose. I'd love to see us get enough people together to take up an entire team... I have a feeling we'd pwn.

Ya, im either working, sleeping or playing (or family stuff).
It reminds me of my Paintball days (first maneuver you learn is to slide into bunkers or obstacles to avoid getting hit). you really do have to move tactically and with coordination. it also takes a lot more skill than the avg FPS game. in the past crouch jumping was the master technique, but here you can do all that without looking like an idiot tucking and jumping all the time.
So far ive only specialized into medic, which is pretty cool by itself. you have heals and revives, but also can increase speed, regeneration rate, and allow a player to ignore damage for a short period of time. (I can imagine a heavy body soldier with a gat being buffed by this for some major damage dealing and tanking)
I'll admit it does need some polish and I feel that the maps bottleneck areas TOO much in order to create good fighting areas (escort missions have a set linear path vs something like CS where the hostage followed you) which can result in stalemate situations. but they also make for some epic hard won mission when you manage to push your way past them.
also, I recommend staying away from FF matches, sliding (which knocks down enemy players) affect teammates and can really get in the way when your huddled up behind a bunker. Adamaro knows first hand when his sniper shots were ruined by a Team griefer that slid into him constantly. I like FF most of the time (makes you really think about what your doing) but here it has too much chance for incidental mishaps until they get it fixed (if they ever do)
one more thing: as suggested to me by Adamaro, do your challenges early or with a low level character, as you level up, the AI dumbs down. Im guessing that the developers felt that players would increase thier skills quite a bit while levels increased and adjusted the AI quite a bit. I found my 2 star "be more objective" challenge nearly impossible because my AI was as about as intelligent as the gum on my boots (they would just rush to group of enemys to get slaughtered, never taking cover while the opposing force had a balance of all classes and utilized them very effectively)
The Parkour challenge is also a good way to get used to the movement system. The escort mission and tower defense were meh IMO, but the have upgrades and thats what counts.
all 3 star challenges are just for leaderboard listing, so do if you want, but you dont get anything but xp and kudos from it.

Don't have the energy for a full review, but a couple things.
Character Customization, while pretty cool looking, is nowhere near as detailed as I felt they let on.
This game NEEDS multiple objectives. Having a single thing to deal with, that the defending team can literally just park on and hold, means that if there's even a modicum of organization on one team, it can become very very hard to shift people from the objective. Yeah, sure, go for the Command Points... it's like they're a distraction or something.
Wait... that's it? - Really Story? Really?
For the most part I've been enjoying it, but at the moment, I think I'm going to go play some Gatling Gears.

Game Breakdown Character customization: Body Type: A heavy character can only jump over objects waste high, they are slower, and have the most health. They can also use heavy weapons.
A medium character can climb anything up to head height. They have average health and average speed. They can use all weapons but heavies.
A light character can do wall hops which allow them to reach much higher places than any other body types. They are the weakest and fastest body type. They can only use smgs, pistols, and light rifles (sniper rifles). Cosmetics: You can choose your face, voice, and skin tone when creating your character. As you level up you will get different cosmetics accessories. These include face/head gear, shirt, jacket, face paint, facial hair, pants, tattoos.
Weapons: Weapons come in four categories and have multitude of attachments from muzzle breaks to a speed holster. Most weapons can have up to four attachments. You can have two primary but you sacrifice a knife while doing so. Their are also different grenades. Heavy: Only used by heavy body types. Ex: Gatling gun
Medium: Average most balanced weapon.
Light: Include Smgs and snipers.
Side Arms: pistols, they allow you to use the knife.
Classes: I am not including upgrades and abilities
Soldier: Molotov, destruction objectives, refill ammo
Abilities: are upgrades and unlocks for your class and general play. They include buffs, mines, and turrets . When used they cost one pip on your energy bar. http://brink.wikia.com/wiki/Abilities
Parkour: Allows you to move vertically over objects, slide, sprint, wall hop. This makes the game play extremely fast paced. You can do this manually(faster and smoother) or by the sprint button.
Game types: This includes the campaign which I don't need to explain. Challenges which get you xp, attachments, and weapons. Free play lets you go online, create bot matches, and create private matches.
Gameplay: The game is very fast paced and promotes teamwork( with out this you will fail hard) It controls like any other first person shooter. The HUD also is very recognizable. It offers a lot of versatility in what you choose to do and how you react to situation. Most matches are objective based with primary and secondary objectives.
I really am enjoying the game. It reminds me of BF combined with TF2. The game has to be the most fast paced shooter that I have ever played. The parkour is fun and easy though disorienting to some.

unfortunately if you have a Radeon HD 4XXX series of vid card (have a 4870 myself), you're in for an ugly world of hurt. nasty grid over everything.
here's to hoping they patch it up quick.

My biggest complaint bout this game...
the baddies who I have to play with...
aye - I've been rezzed .. a total of twice, I think? They are almost as good as the NPC's on the second tier of of the "Be more Objective" challenge. =p
S'ok though, I got your heals!

I'll have your heals too when i get the chance to play with you :P unfortunately my timing is a bit off atm since I work overnight and sleep during the day. sometimes i can get on in the afternoons, but other times im playing in the morning. (like now.)

Do you guys play together often? I'm tempted to try this out but considering that most of the people that are on the same time i am are hooked on LoL, it'll be a little disheartening playing Brink with random retards.

Trust me if you have the $40-50 to spend it is well worth it ... There is a solid few of us that are pretty much always in game and ready to play.
Although I would like to see ranked matches within the game at this point ...
Like a set group against a set group. That way teamwork and strategy definitely comes more into play. Sometimes you will just run towards the objective and some of the baddies still haven't caught on to the idea that this game isn't CoD and KILL KILL KILL.

Also you may want to upgrade for tor.
