Title: Graphics card upgrade
Post by: Manic Velocity on March 27, 2010, 03:27:38 pm
I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card. One that is better equipped for BFBC2 and APB. My current card is an NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT. I'd like to stay under $200.

Any suggestions?

For the price/performance, I would recommend an Nvidia GTX 260 or an ATI Radeon 5770.

What is wrong with a 9600 GT? I have an 8800 GT and it's a great card. I run 1080p in all my games and I'm bottlenecked by my AMD 4800+

Here are cards under $200. You can get an ATI 5770 or GTX 260 which is probably slightly better than the GT cards.

Or you should really wait until the new GTX cards come down in price. They are releasing the 470 and 480 which is DirectX 11. That will drag down the price of all the other models soon.

Never had a problem with the 9600 until I bought BFBC2. Even on the lowest settings, my system chokes up during the heavy battles, and I get skips and hiccups even when there's nothing going on. And when APB launches I'd like to take advantage of the visuals.

GTX 480.  $500.

Shouldn't have to upgrade for a very long time. :D

I'll wait until the 400 series is released and see how those pan out.  Not in any paricular rush to upgrade.

I know this may seem trivial, but you upgraded your video card drivers, right?

ARGH! Computers is so hard!  Too much things to remember in my brain!

Actually, I haven't upgraded the drivers since I built the machine last year.  I'll try this when I get home from the cabin.

Then this should definitely solve any immediate problems you're having. I have an 8800 GTO, and I was having the same exact problem. The game was choppy and bugged up when it shouldn't bug up. In the notes for the latest driver, they had optimized the driver for BF:BC2. The game now runs beautifully.

Sure enough, a driver update was released just three days ago, and it adds support for BFBC2.

I guess I'll wait until APB comes out to decide if I actually need an upgrade.
