There are two components of the game that are pretty tightly interweaved: the more traditional MMO portions where you use your skills and interact with other players to achieve goals and defeat monsters, and the building bit, where you have your own territory and can build anything you want out of Lego pieces.
The best bit is the promise that you'll be able to take digital creations you make in the game and make a custom set, complete with constructions, in meatspace. Lego will figure out which pieces are necessary to build your masterpiece, give you a price list, and ship you a custom box with everything inside. It won't be available at launch, but it is coming soon. The game will ship in 2010.

It actually doesn't sound too bad. I dunno if it's a game I could play "hardcore", but the idea of doing quests to get blocks and shit to build up your pad is pretty cool.

I played for a few minutes today. There was no lag and everything was pretty smooth. The stuff I did seemed pretty polished. I really didn't get past the tutorial stuff (had just gotten to the intro to combat really). It is definitely geared towards a younger crowd (you collect imagination points to build stuff an put on your thinking cap to go into build mode). Didn't get to the meat an potatoes of having your own territory to build on or anything, but I imagine that is where the good stuff begins. Unfortunately I have work all day tomorrow myself but when I do have time it'll be interesting to keep exploring.

I made it into the gameworld proper. There are some elements that are standard to the MMO genre. (One of your first missions is to kill 10 "Darklings") Other missions have you constructing radio towers and gun turrets in defense of the "Maelstrom".
You earn weapons and clothing to improve your stats. You loot blocks, coins, and "imagination" from defeated enemies. Your imagination adds up and is used as a type of currency when you build things. You'll see a pile of bricks on the ground that you'll need to assemble in order to complete a mission, and you'll need to "use your imagination" to construct it. Holding Shift or 'F' while standing next to the brick pile will assemble the bricks as your imagination bar drains. Once the bricks are assembled, you'll have about ten to fifteen seconds before they disassemble.
As Tbone said, the "free build" mode is definitely going to be the meat and potatos of this game. The newbie area gives you a very brief intro of this, though I couldn't find a way to access this build mode in the open game world. The article I linked to a while back talked about having your own private building space to construct as you please, but it wasn't readily apparent how to access this.
For being in beta, the game ran surprisingly smoothly for me. I only had about an hour and a half worth of game time, but it was a lot of fun. The game has an obvious casual feel to it, and focuses on community and collaboration as opposed to combat and character progression.
My goal is to reconstruct scenes and locations from the Matrix and MxO once I figure out how to get to the free build mode. Mara Central will probably be my first. :D
