AT CES DELL UNVEILS FIRST "ALL POWERFUL" ULTRA MOBILE GAMING SYSTEM
· The Alienware M11x, the most powerful 11-inch gaming laptop in the universe — as easy to carry as it is powerful, making high-performance gaming accessible to all.
Alienware M11x · The Alienware M11x demonstrates the graphics power of a 15-inch laptop in an 11-inch form factor · Play all of your games and media, whether at home or away, at HD 720p resolution · With the Alienware M11x, gamers can enjoy the feel of the gaming without compromise anywhere they go.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/SlipknotZombie/500x_dell68.jpg) According to Dell, the M11X is the most powerful laptop under 15 inches. And, playing CoD at 30fps, with 720P resolution (on what's essentially a netbook), I fell in love with the little machine.
Let me make this clear: The M11X is unabashedly Alienware. I mean, its LEDs behind the keyboard and thermal grates sort of give that away. I'm not crazy about the plastic case, and I wish the 1366x768 screen were covered in glass instead of plastic. As someone who appreciates minimal design, it's pretty much the antithesis of my taste.
Yet, I still liked the M11X.
While it manages to still weigh in at a hefty 4 or so pounds (your brain doesn't anticipate the weight), it's just an incredible amount of power for an 11.6-inch laptop.
Inside, you'll find an energy-sipping Core2Duo alongside a 1GB Nvidia 335M graphics card—which is fairly insane for the size. But playing Star Trek Online and Call of Duty, I didn't doubt the power. You can't run CoD with anti-aliasing on, but otherwise, the experience is sharp, smooth and surprisingly palatable on the tiny display—keep in mind, I was testing it running off a battery.
The trackpad and keyboard both feel pretty good, too. The trackpad has just enough texture, and the keyboard isn't too cramped with nicely curved keys. The battery is non-removable, but the 8-cell lithium ion polymer lasts 6 1/2 hours casually or 2 hours of full-out gaming. Plus there's a battery meter on the case's underside.
Also of note, you'll find ports galore. 3 USBs, an HDMI, DisplayPort, mini FireWire, VGA and even a SIM slot. Jesus.
But the best news, the news that got me legitimately excited, is that it will be out within a month, specs maxed, for $1000 or under. For that price, you could have an i7 at home, and a little laptop for the road/LAN parties. And why oh why would you ever buy one of those "premium" netbooks again?
Now I'm interested to see what the competition comes up with, and if it'll be better and/or cheaper.

Kind of reminds me of a souped up version my old M1210 XPS (I think it's like 3 or 4 years old now!) that I am back using since my shit HP tablet died a few months ago. And I am a huge fan of HDMI on new laptops, a lot still don't have DVI/HDMI. Only thing is all the LEDs are a little flashy but I imagine you can turn them out.
I'll probably be looking for a new laptop around this size soon. I'll keep this in mind.

That's pretty impressive for it's size. It seems to be a bit better than my current laptop.
It's a little small for my taste though. I just recently bought the newer version of the M15x (Not the Area 51) with the i7 core.
Still waiting for that puppy to come in. After watching some of the videos on it i was really impressed with what it was capable of. I probably would have ended up spending that money on the M17x had that line come with i7 Cpus.

I would hands down say go for an M17x if it had an i7 core (and of course if money wasn't an issue :P)
I take my laptop everywhere, so lugging around a 17inch laptop is a bit of a pain. Considering that the M15x is over 7 lbs, i can't imagine how much heavier the M17x is.

Unless you are on the road a lot and want to play games what is the point of getting a monster laptop? It defeats the purpose in my opinion. I'll take a small powerful laptop that I can dock to a second screen when I get home to do most tasks and then build a budget desktop to do the serious gaming. Back in the day I had no problems playing matrix on my XPS 1210.

Well you hit the nail on the head...
Personally i'm always out of my house. My house is mainly just used as a place to sleep. Otherwise i'm out in a different location. So yes, I run this because i'm always on the road. If i built a Gaming rig for at home it would just sit there and never get attetion. It's the same as all my consoles, i never use them since i'm never at home.

The Alienware M11x, with over 6.5 hours of battery life and weighing under 4.5 lbs. will start at an amazing $799! Leave it to the folks at Alienware to enable truly mobile performance gaming at an affordable price.
I will be buying one. Probably with the blue back-lighting. Looks better than the red.

Like I'm trying to count like how many times like the guy said, "like"
But it's priced right. I would imagine a good build would be around $1300. And that is a great price. That's about what the M1210 ran me 4 years ago.

Yeah this is definitely the REAL portable gaming rig.
It's not a Monster but should be able to run most if not all current games pretty well. Not only that but it certainly looks more portable than the M15x and WAY cheaper. Definitely a good buy if you're not power hungry.

Post by: Tecknik on February 02, 2010, 06:55:08 pm
Base model is $799 in the US.
After thinking about it, the SU7300 is only worth the extra $100 if you plan on using Windows Virtual PC, or XP Mode, in Windows 7. The SU7300 and the SU4100 are basically the same chip. The differences being that the SU7300 has Virtualization support, and an extra 1MB of L2 cache. They are both 1.3Ghz dual core processors. The SU7300 being a Core 2 Duo, and the SU4100 being a Pentium.
It also doesn't make sense to add Windows 7 Ultimate for an extra $150 (Or even Professional for $130) for the same reason listed above. If you're not going to be using WVPC or XP Mode, Windows 7 Home Premium should be fine.
That puts the price back at $850 after upgrading to 4GBs of DDR3, up from 2GBs.
It's also been shown that in the BIOS is an option to overclock to a preset value, which I've read boosts processor speed up to 1.6Ghz.
So for $850, you're getting a lightweight, compact powerhouse that will run for 7-8 hours (3-4 gaming), and can run Crysis at 50 fps, MW2 at 30 fps, and Street Fighter 4 at anywhere from 60 to 90 fps at the computer's maximum resolution (1366 x 768, AKA 720p).

It really is an impressive laptop for it's price and size. This is by no means a replacement for a Desktop but can run most games decent to good.
I think i've mentioned it before, but if you're one that is always wanting more power this isn't for you. If you want to be able to run everything that's out there right now and need something that's lightweight and lasts long, look no further. Also, since Dell bought Alienware the build quality has been improved substantially. The refreshed laptops all have amazing cooling design. Overclocking shouldn't be a huge issue, you'll more than likely crash your system (drivers if it's your vid card) before you overheat.

Dude, you can always go to the dell site and set a config you're comfortable with.
They can run anywhere from $799-$1200ish. It just depends on config. I also can't stress enough..
ALWAYS call them if you wish to make a purchase. They LOVE when people just go and buy on the site because they don't question the price. Their profit margin is ridiculous and can be lowered quite a bit if you're charismatic enough and willing to spend some time haggling. Even if you don't get a lowered price, you can talk them into giving free express shipping or maybe a backpack / other accessories thrown in there.
There's a link to a forum thread explaining some ways you can save money. I visit that forum occasionally since it's one, if not, the best place to get info on laptops. It's definitely got a lot of good reads if you're looking for some dirt on a specific laptop.
Subb, the C2D CPU was apparently the weakest part of the system. Apparently all the other parts of the system end up waiting for the CPU causing the whole system to bottleneck compared to it's i7 counterpart. They then decided to offer the i7 for those that wanted to spend a few more for the extra power with already amazing portability. Does this mean it's a bad system?
Nope, it just depends on what gaming you're planning on doing with it.
It's all about the balance between power, portability, and price.

Yeah, I read that the C2D was pants and that's why I waited until the i7 came out. I've also heard that to unlock the Alienware's true potential you need to overclock it... which I'd love to do, but I have NO idea how to do so. I know you need to go onto the BIOS but I have no clue what to do after that. If anyone could give me pointers or a guide via the web, I'd love you long time. I did google a few, but I trust you guys more than the randomers on the net (plus, literally half of the guides were different to one another...)
Also Arch, do you know of any other Laptops that rival the M11x or are even better? Thing is though, I have student discount/EEP with Dell...

I'm sure there are some that rival it but i don't know of any off the top of my head to be honest. I'm usually more into the 15" laptops. As for OCing, The only thing i know is that it should just be an option in the bios. Most people that DO OC apparently run anywhere between 133- 166. That's what i've read anyway.
I'd say just to fiddle with it and just slowly increase it to something you're comfortable your laptop can handle. Test it out and see if the gains are worth it since no two CPUs (Or any peice of hardware for that matter) are exactly the same.
In most cases the fact that you're using an i7 would help a lot more compared to a C2D, period.

The alienware techie's going to link my m11x via the internet/AlienCommand so he can see what's wrong and put it right. I've managed to get the GFX drivers working reasonably well (can play dragon age on high settings) but don't want to push it until I've got the green light. Apparently, the mistake I did is quite common (that cheered me up) but takes quite a while to correct.
