Title: The Secret World
Post by: Jeyk on September 10, 2009, 05:36:44 pm
The more I hear about this game, the more my interest grows.  When I began following it, I had no idea it would turn out to be a 'modern day MMO'.

I like the initiation test...

Looks interesting to me.. So is it a MMO or is it just single player game that has cooperative parts with PVP?

Oh and if we are thinking about getting into it which way to we go Templars / Dragons / Illuminati

A semi-modern/mythological/horror MMO.

FINALLY.

Templars would fit better with our name/persona.

This actually looks really interesting.

Looking at all three, the Dragons seem to fit with us well.

"Manipulators and conspirators, the Dragon have survived for millennia by playing their enemies against each other. Since before the first empire, though the aggression of the Mongol Khans and the ebb and tide of political change, a whisper in the right ear, a strategic assassination, alliances careflly crafted and broken - and the world eventually bends to the patient will of the immortal Dragon.

With a spiritual and philosophical approach to the secret crafts, as an acolyte of the Dragon you are taught to listen, shown how to teach others, and expected to respect the balance of the universe and to be humble in the face of fate. Yours is not the path of force, though force is often needed to clear the path.

Few know of the Dragon and their long history, and that is how the Dragon want it. You are invisible but pervasive, silent but all-knowing, and when the other secret societies have decimated each other, you will rebuild the world from ruins of their arrogance.

The Dragon is too easily underestimated, but those who do so live to regret it - or die before they get the chance."

Looks very interesting.

This is my shit right there.  If they can accomplish what they are setting out to accomplish.....I will HAVE to be a part of this.  The setting is something I've been looking for, for a very long time.  The premise of the game is perfect IMO.

I think the Templars would fit us best.  The Dragons are portrayed to be very diabolical and malicious in their methods.  That is not us.  We don't support plunging the world into chaos as a means to order.  We are more the type who are not afraid to wade into the chaos that someone else has created to bring order and justice.

I will be keeping an eye on this one for damned sure.

THat sounds about right because the same thing happened to me.

The link to the article mentioned that the Templars would level an entire village if it meant getting to and destroying the demon hiding within...or something similarly worded.

The first "unlucky" Friday the 13th was started when the order came down to hunt persecute the Templars (October 13th, 1307). The Templars were believed to be cursed men, and since this order essentially wiped them out, people believed the day itself to be cursed now.

Post by: Ash on September 15, 2009, 12:14:17 pm
God bless "cut & paste".  LOL.

More specifically though the french King at the time, jealous of the Templar's wealth and reach of power made a secret pact with the Pope (who also feared the Templar's) to eradicate the Templar's and claim their properties and wealth for his own.  The Pope was the one who put out the decree turning them into Devil worshipers and the like.  On Friday October 13th, 1307 French soldiers along with Papal guards rounded up all (well not really all, but that's another story) Templar's from every part of Europe and Great Britain and either executed them or imprisoned them and forced them to confess to "acts against God" using torture and similar punishment.

Another fact as to why the Templar's had gained so much wealth (even though one of the tenants of their belief was to take a vow of poverty) was that they created the banking system we use today.  They were the first to lend people money in exchange for charging interest whilst repaying it.  They were basically the first "banks" in the world.  This, and the fact that the French King was broke, is what made the Templar's wealth so tempting.

Thus endeth today's lesson on the Templar's...

The countdown clock on the front page is a funny thing. If you look at the time it is giving, the numbers are as thus:

days - 1 1 9 1
hours - 05
min - 43
sec - 23
milisec - too fast to count

Look for yourself, but be warned the digits that appear as "4" "6" and "8" actually arent. Watch the second counter. When the first digit changes, the corresponding digit is presumably 9. Start with that and count down from there. The first digit only goes to 5, like a regular counter.

So I can figure out that at this point there are 5 hours, 43 mins, and some odd seconds.... presumably to the game launch.

But what does the 1 1 9 1 mean?
It isn't 11 months, 91 days (that would be roughly 13 months, 1 day)
Same for 1 year, 19 months, 1 day... makes no sense.

Possibly 11-9-1? November 9th of 2011? or 2010? Or November 1st of 2009 (European way).

It points to the end of the present cycle, according to the Mayan long Count (calendar) and has been a popular date for the end of the world, specially in the past few years.  probably it points at a very important date in the game story, as those numbers (dec. 12, 2012) have showed up in several of the puzzle elements.  Perhaps it's when the massive apocalyptic event is supposed to happen or something like that.

This game captured my interest when they released their first trailer a few months back, but I haven't heard anything new about it since then. I did some searching when I first heard of it and I found a forum that had been started by Tournquist himself, though nobody knew it at the time. He set up this whole intricate plot, similar to that of a Dan Brown novel, and pretended to be an investigator who was enlisting the help of the forum users (about 10-15 people at the time) to help him solve this puzzle. He even kept it up for the good part of two years if I recall.

This game's beginnings were in some seedy back alley forum with about 10 members, who were playing their way through an intricate puzzle/plot, I read a synopsis provided by one of those few peolple and it was insanely entertaining. That right there makes me infinitely more interested in this game than I would be otherwise.

Overall, I'm looking forward to it.

EDIT: Found it on N4G.  I don't mind the zombies so much.  I think the last zombie game I played was RE1 on the Playstation, so I'm not jaded by the concept.  I just wish game trailers would show some actual gameplay.  :\

The town of Kingsmouth is central in a few of Lovecraft's stories, so I guess the rumors are true.  So far, I like the idea of this game.  I just want to see how it actually plays.

Its not going to entirely zombies. It will most likely be all the myths and legends you heard as a kid in a video game. Their will probably be werewolves, vampires, demons, etc.

Title: The Secret World
Post by: Strod on February 02, 2010, 10:45:54 am
It's not hate towards Zombies, it's a great modern "Demon" but everyone does it now days.

I mean, don't get me wrong I'm with Manic and really digging the H.P. Lovecraft influences among others, but the game could turn ugly very quickly or go gold over night.

Having faith in games now days is a hard thing to do, 90% of them let you down or dumb down their potential to meet dates or meet some kind of bullshit standard set by the company that owns said game maker.

I know the game will be full of a lot of creatures from different times and lore periods, they have been saying that.

All, I'm saying is -- it could be a great game to watch for. However, that so called trailer and crap dialog isn't a good start.

Also Manic has it wrong Kingsmouth was not a place in the books. It is the combination of Innsmouth and Kingsport from the lovecraft books. So since they are taking inspiration as it seems from the Lovecraft mythos do you think we will see anything like the Great Old Ones, Elder Gods, and or the Yith?

You want a game that will use a system like Eve's then you should check out World of Darkness online. Their isn't much info about it though, more should come out around E3. The only thing we know is its being made by ccp and is using the WOD as a setting.

I actually don't mind the stylized look.  The models don't look too cartoony.  All the bodies... the human ones at least... are much more proportional than TF2 models.  They remind me of Sims 3 models more than anything else.

The trailer actually showed very little gameplay.  A few players attacking monsters for split seconds, but most of it was scripted.  But the chick doing the voice-over sounded super hot.  :)

I’ve played Ragnar Tørnquist's previous games (the Longest Jouny, and Dreamfall). Every game he has worked on always carried a lot of emotional weight and small touches of humor. He is great at creating a functioning world from scratch (or in the case of his previous games two parallel worlds). I don’t know how well he would translate from single player to an MMO.
Regarding the stylized look for the characters I recommend playing Dreamfall, it shows that the look actually pushes the emotional aspects better than a photorealistic look. You can see his fingerprints all over at least the latest trailer; prophesy fate and the nature of the competition between good and evil including its balance are all themes that he has explored in his previous games. I just hope that after this game he makes another Dreamfall.

PVP, missioning, and guild talk. Looks like it's going to be an interesting game!

The more I see this game the more I like it.

Did they just make a matrix reference?

Is it sad that my favorite bad guy boss on that video was the Trex?

The game is due out in April and starts accepting Beta apps in nine days.

Frankly I'm not as excited for this game as I once was. Especially considering this is going to come out AFTER TOR, I think it will feel pretty sophomoric in comparison. The one thing that sounds interesting is having to search for real life clues to figure out puzzles and what not, but even that could feel more like a frustration than a game enhancement.

I've been following it for a few years and was highly interested, honestly thought at one time I was going to head to it instead of TOR . The secret societies and urban settings and puzzles really interested me. But the more they've released about it the less appealing it has become in recent months especially with the latest reveal. It feels like they took the game in a different direction at the last moment. Still going to check it out but yeah my interest has definitely fallen off as well, and poor timing on their part.

Still keeping an eye on that one myself.  Looks like it could go either way.

I'm assuming they're going to do a skill system ala Darkfall?  If so, we all saw what happened there...

The best system I've seen yet is......wait for it......Eve Online's. No grinding. At least not the same kind of grinding.  However unless the skilll system is deep and robust it won't work.  They have GOT to stop dumbing down and pre-fucking these new MMOs that come out. There's already too many easy, instant gratification games for dummies out there now.

Not having a Facebook account (or rather one I want to activate at present) I thought I couldn't sign up.

However, you can sign up without Facebook, but you will miss out on "The Experience" part.
