I watched the abridged version. So what's the point of Wave? Looks like simply a more versatile IMing/social networking program.

It is a web application and computing platform designed to bring together e-mail, instant messaging, wiki, and social networking, with a strong collaborative focus, mixed with spellchecker and translator extensions, which are able to work in concert, in real-time.

i.e. a more versatile IMing program. Basically what Trillian or Digsby does, only in a much easier format that basically combines everything into one interface rather than just putting them all in a place where they can easily be accessed individually. So it's a FaceTwitGmailIM

When they went into building they identified the issues with email.  Email is an electronic emulation of snail mail and there's only so much it can do.  They asked themselves "What would email look like if it were invented today".  So they came up with wave.  It's like email but so many amazing tricks and features.  Well not like email... like... you can have email "like" communication or IM "like" communication, or document collaboration, manage forum threads, blog comments, twitter stuff like every kind of communication at one command center.  Watch the first 40 minutes of the full keynote and you might get a better idea of the possibilities.  The trees, playback, linking forums/blogs bidirectionally, uber collaboration...  It's still pretty mind boggling.

It looks ok, I signed up for the beta. Although, I'm awful sick of social networking crap.
