Title: SWG
Post by: Adad on October 30, 2008, 10:36:38 pm
OK, out of boredom I gave Star wars galaxies a try since I was always curious about it. I just subscribed for a month after completing my 2 week trial. Just wondering, does anyone play this? Let me know. my character is Jonet Danew.

Die. Kthx.
I played that before I got into MxO, had a short stint with it for a week some time ago after they did the whole revamp thing. Its just another reason SoE needs to die.

I'm not saying its amazing, but its just like the first time you entered MxO. The matrix atmosphere, working to meet important characters, the first time you hyperjump. I'm enjoying that sort of thing. Just earned my lightsaber. So I'm enjoying the Star Wars atmosphere mainly. A lot of cool shit with the variety of vehicles and ability to build just about anything, and own a home. Makes me realize just how lacking MxO indeed was.

What server are you on Adad? I have a level 40- or 50- something on the Shadowfire server.
I'd need to re-sub, though. And re-download too. I have all the expansions, and some pretty bad ass (at least I think they're bad ass) items.

I have an SWG account but I'm not subb'd atm. ;)
Wait for Star Wars: The Old Republic... it looks fucking sweet and it's only pre-beta! www.swtor.com

I've gotta agree with Sared 1000%. I Played this game from the first few hours on launch day up until they did their first major overhaul. You think its amazing because it is a new experience and you didn't see what it was upon original release.
Sure there were some bugs on release, but this was the first and only MMO I've played to date that had the feel of a real living, breathing online world/society. The economy wasn't perfect, but it worked. The crafting system was amazing and relied hevily on interaction with other skills because you had to rely on others with mining/hunting/and other crafting skills to supply materials and parts needed to craft your goods. You could own shops to sell what you made or for others to sell what they made. The wilderness was actually dangerous to travel alone populated heavily with creatures of all kinds....dangerous and not. The world was populated with many people at all hours of the night. ....even some of the smaller cities. Cantinas were actually very fun to go to hang out and socialize with other players.
Although there were complaints of it not being "star warsy" enough I felt my character existed in a real world.
The thing that made me hate SOE was when they screwed up the whole Jedi thing. Originally it was a mystery as to what it took to unlock path to becoming a Jedi. This is true to the Star Wars history. No one could just choose to become a Jedi. There was actually some mystery to that whole idea.
Overall, SWG has been dumbed down almost to idiocy. I will never play it again. Which is a shame because if they had simply improved what was bugged or broken from the original release and added to that, I would still be playing it.

What level are you?
I think you can move characters to other servers, I just don't remember how. Let me look it up. Maybe I'll move Tecknik to Bloodfin.
EDIT: Wow... Googled "Star wars galaxies character transfer server" and this was the first one to pop up.
A post from today talking about how to do free character transfers while still retaining all items and such as soon as Chapter 11 launches early next year. http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/posts/list.m?topic_id=774659

interesting. didn't look at the link yet. On their main website i saw their character transfer service. I'm a 32. I know its not amazing but i did it in like 4 days of playing. I'm pathetic again. But I start a new job tomorrow (in 6 hours actually so I should probably go to bed soon),so I shouldn't have tooo much time to zap at this game like we all did with MxO. I'd love to join your server tho if you still play so ill look into it. Someone get me a real job please...Lits, I know you have (had) one on the line, make it happen. I'm poor.

Alright, I just re-subbed. Downloaded and logged on yesterday. I forgot how much fun space combat is.
It's funny though. As soon as I logged in, I received all the rewards for like 1 year vet, 1.25 year vet, 1.5 year vet, 1.75 year vet, 2 year vet, and so on even though I haven't been playing that entire time.
I think I'll make a character on Bloodfin just so we can hang out and shit. My character on Shadowfire is a level 52. If you want to make a character on Shadowfire, we can go up in my ARC-170 and blast shit out of the sky.

You need to look for Starship Chassis/Ship Component vendors. Check your map, and you should be able to bring up any on the planet.
You can either buy Starship Chassis blueprints, which you bring to the Starship NPC at most Starports. He will tell you how much it'll cost to build it, and you choose to build it or not. Or some places sell deeds to ships. If you bought a ship deed, all you do is go to your inventory and unpack it to your datapad. Then you have the ship chassis. You'll still need to add a reactor, engine, weapons, etc.
Some ships are given to you as rewards for doing certain quests/missions. The ARC-170 was a reward for one of the "The Clone Relics" quests.
The ship you have is the Z-95 Headhunter. http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Z-95_Headhunter

I have quite a few ships.
I have...
The ARC-170 (Episode 3 Clone Trooper ship - Said to be one of the best in the game): http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/ARC-170
The Advanced X-Wing: http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Advanced_X-wing
The Belbullab-22 (General Grievous' ship): http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Belbullab-22
The Sorosuub Luxury Yacht (6-month Vet reward. Party ship - no weapons, invulnerable): http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Sorosuub_Luxury_Yacht
Then I have deeds for...
Y-Wing: http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Y-wing
Regular X-Wing: http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Y-wing
Dunelizard, Style 2 (Click 2 under pictures): http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/MandalMotors_G1-M4-C_"Dunelizard"_Starfighter
And a deed for another Sorosuub Yacht.
I also have chassis blueprints for the Naboo N-1 Starfighter: http://swg.wikia.com/wiki/Naboo_N-1_Starfighter
I'm pissed because I didn't realize Rebel pilots could not fly Freelance pilot ships. The N-1 is considered a Freelance pilot ship, and so is the Dunelizard.

I tried it on the 2 week trial (only layed for 1 hour)....it seemed to get boring pretty quick... maybe with a team it's more fun, but alone I almost fell asleep.

Oh please... I played this game to Apprentice Jedi back BEFORE the combat revision.. fabulous working economy, but after CR2.0 I was like *doink*... and thus I came to the Matrix via T.

Yeah, they changed the "Jedi" system before they change the combat system didn't they?

I got to the level cap (lvl 80 back then, I think) with a Jedi Pre CU and it was FUCKING awesome. You had to work your ass off to get to it and it took 6 months TRAINING (real time) to actually earn the rank as apprentice, that's how it should be. Shame I deleted my character :(

Seems like they changed the Jedi system with CR2.0, but it's been so long I could be wrong

And that is what sealed the deal for me to never again play SOE's SWG.
I'll wait for the emulator that takes it back to the pre CU status.

Got to say, I enjoyed SWG a TON up until that damn NGE. Gotta agree with Lits, Phienyx and Sared there. Up till then it was my opinion that it was absolutely fantastic.

Any game that has a dev team that works hard enough to do something like this....
Deserves credit in my book. ;)
I didn't even try SWG until after NGE, not because I didn't want to, but because I didn't have an interest in MMOs when SWG came out. After playing, and becoming bored with MxO, I decided to branch out and did the 14-day free trial for SWG. After playing for a few hours, I decided SWG was well worth my money. I guess I don't know (and never will know) the world that was pre-CU/pre-NGE, but I don't really give a damn. I enjoy the game. I love that you not only have your ground PvE/PvP, but you can also switch it up with space PvE/PvP. I love that there is actually an ongoing story you can follow, as well as tons of quests you can perform to be well rewarded with both XP and in-game items. The fact that the SWG dev team works hard to please the SWG player community speaks volumes.
But I guess they can't please everyone. :)

The problem is that when you go from an excellent system with the original release to a watered down, dumbed down shadow of its original self, you are going to disappoint most, if not all of your original hardcore player-base. The current incarnation has none of the depth and character of the original. Unless you experienced the original, it is difficult to explain why we hate the changes that SOE brought to it.
Imagine they took the Matrix movies, recast it and dumbed down its ideas and philosophies so that an elementry child would "get it" and you might get an idea of the scope of the changes that were visited upon what I still believe to be one of the best MMOs that could have been.
I don't think any of us are trying to make you dis-like SWG, but those of us who were there and experienced the original (I was there from release day 1) know that is is not the same game at all.

Yeah it's not the same game that used to be amazing. But on the topic of that update it's cool, seems like they may finally be advancing the story/time line of SWG, about time too but it's a pity it's really no longer a competitive MMO anymore imo.
