I do not want to lug around my desktop so I need a decent laptop (which dad said he would pay for as a passing my exams treat! woop! He'll die once he finds out how much a 'decent' one is). I can get some kind of discount with Dell 'cause I'm a student (roughly 3%)
I've done two saved laptops, can you review 'em and tell me which one I should choose? Or recommend a totally different one, I'm not fusseh.

Subb = University Student = MUST HAVE MAXIMUM WARRANTY ON ALL ELECTRONICS.
....Trust Me.
-
i'm taking out insurance on all my belongings as I'm taking a laptop, tv and my ps3 :P
-
How much do you plan on carrying it around? If you plan on a lot I would go with the 15.4 inch, otherwise the 17in.
Reason, Hard drive space == nothing now, a 250GB External is worth next to nothing now.
-
I was going to recommend the Gateway FX line, but it doesn't appear to be available on your side of the pond.
Awkward.
-
This is the one that I plan on getting soon.

Truly, yours is not that much worse as the GS lines are really just retooled 8600s, and you already have a BluRay player in the PS3.

subb, try this website - www.novatech.co.uk; now look behind the label basically, this company purchases laptops from sager/ lenovo then rebadges them.
When alienware buggered up my order I went with these guys and have not looked back since. The build quality is amazing and the components tres bien.
also, which course again?
-
Osteopathy, cheers for the website NoCry. Je suis having a looksie now!

Going for the Pro model, most probably - looks nice. I have an XP disk here, but should I go for Vista?
Hmmm.

If you're ever going to play the Matrix on that computer, you're going to want to go XP because of all the graphic issues related to the game when using Vista.
-
i dual boot subb, to get advantage of xp for matrix and vista/ dx 10 for other games.
-
hmmm well, this game looks like it could play crysis on medium, nearly high (correct me if I'm wrong!) and MxO should run smooooothleeeh, therefore DC Universe online should work :) so I'll stay with XP for the time being, but if I get some extra cash I'll blow it on Vista.
-
I totally read the title of this thread wrong like....3 times. Anyway I have no clue about laptops...'cause I'm not allowed to even look at them anymore...Hubby says I start begging when I see the shiny cases and the drool worthy specs. *sighs*

56K Internal Modem
nVidia 8400M G Turbo Cache PCI Express Graphics
for £562.83. no OS supplied. Yes or non? I'm finding it difficult to choose one :S

what's the price difference between the standard and the Pro version?

This is what you need, Subb:

Excellent laptop, but don't even think of installing hardware drivers that aren't signed by Microsoft. Vista 64-bit will only allow digitally signed and approved drivers.
-
a tad too expensive, Tecknik :P
£492.63 is the standard Yotogi - but the processor is Intel T5750 Core 2 Duo Mobile 2MB Cache Dual Core Processor with a 2 x 2.0Ghz Processor speed. The HDD is also smaller (160GB SATA Hard Drive).
the maximum I can spend is roughly.... £600/$1100

I use Vista Ultimate x64 and was using unsigned drivers for my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum for a while. Creative finally released official working drivers August 1st.
Oh, and unsigned nVidia beta drivers.

How confident are you in building your own laptop?

Install a Core 2 Duo, memory, hard drive, and operating system , and you're done.
Gateway also has a lower-model FX gaming laptop available for $850:

A week ago it was at $750. :(
-
Hmm, I wonder if that's just true for your card or if they really made unsigned drivers available to the 64-bit?
-
I'm having XP on it. I have a OEM version of XP Pro Service Pack 2 so no vista for me atm.
-
I'm looking up components for that DIY kit - looks like it'll be more expensive than other gaming laptops out there.
-
The Gateway P-7811FX is on sale at Best Buy for the week.
$1250 + any $50 PC game free with purchase of the laptop. So, in other words, $1200 for the laptop with a mandatory $50 game purchase. LOL.

Vista or XP?
-
No OS. I'm putting XP on it though. the GFX card does do DX10 so.... maybe I'll venture over to Vista in the far future.
-
btw vista works fine with MXO I have been using it for a year. There may be a glitch here and there with it but hell the whole MXO game is a GLITCH so no biggie.

Same.
There is a shader issue that bugs the hell out of me. My face always looks dark, regardless of lighting.
-
Yeah I have something similar but if I ever got on XP the game really starts to f*ck up just ask broin about that. Its more of a video card thing than anything else these new DX10 cards tend to have issues switching back and forth from xp and vista atleast on MXO. On XP the system would run so slow inside of a building it could take 5 mins to run through one. Yet, once your outside its as smooth as glass. I'll gladly take the minor shader issue over that any day.

Subby's on his smexi new laptop
-
FARK ME! It plays HL2 on maximum settings..... without any lag whatsoever! This thing is better than my desktop! :O
-
nice one subb. pleased you went with them.
