Title: Web Dsign help PLEASE!!!
Post by: Adad on April 27, 2008, 11:41:19 pm
So I'm making a myspace profile for someone. It is very important that it's compatible to all browsers. It currently looks just how I want it on IExplorer and Firefox (except for the custom scroll bar) but only the background and contact box display in Safari. If you have ANY USEFUL tips, please help.
The profile is at: www.myspace.com/jonimpact
Here are pics. First two are IExplorer, safari next 2...
if you need th code I can post it. Please help. Thanks.

No its not, this is a different guy. An actual client. And if I can figure this out it can lead to A LOT of money and a lot more, big name clients. So please, can anyone help me with this?

"'colored scrollbars' are/were a proprietary things of IE. It may have been dropped for IE7. At one time, older versions of OPERA browser used this, too.
For "colored scrollbars" to work other-browsers, you will need javascript. I have seen "colored scrollbars" (and WIDER, THICKER, custom-make scrollbars) done this way."

ok, the scrollbars arent even the concern, its why dont the profile pic, texts, friends list, and slideshow show up on Safari... I know my coding is all over the place, but I dont know any better until someone shows me the correct way.

So we don't have one person who knows a solution to this?? What if you take my code and properly arrange it? I'd be forever in debt if anyone could do that and I'd learn proper structure for future use.

What code are you using? Myspace layouts are foreign to me. Is it javascript?

Please don't take offense to this as I'm just telling you what's helped me in my professional experience. If you are getting paid to do this and you don't know what you are doing, you should just do one of two things.
1) Just tell the dude in the beginning, "I can do this, I just never have before. I'll do it free of charge as long as you are patient with any bugs that may pop up. All I ask is if you are happy with the results you allow me to add it to my portfolio and pass my name on." or 2) Do it for pay but hire someone to do it for you and cut them in under the condition they teach you how to do it that way you can do it next time on your own.
I hope this doesn't sound harsh but it's the best way that I've found to learn everything I know web / design related.
As far as the code you pasted can you wrap them in CODE bb tags so I can see the DIV and embedd codes on the video and flash.
Did you code this by hand, use a generator, or modified an existing myspace layout?

I dont take offense to that. I dont charge him for time spent solving my errors obviously. Uh I coded it from a combo of those... by hand and modified pieces of layouts.
.mygen { Miscellaneous Properties } .blacktext12 { visibility:hidden; display:none; } tr {background:transparent;} body table div font a, body table div div {visbility:hidden;} body table table div font a, body table table div div {visibility:visible;} </style>
<style>
.contactTable { width:304px !important; height:158px !important; padding:0px !important; background-color:transparent; border:0px ridge ff6600; background:url(http://jwnettesheim.startlogic.com//NFL/JAllen/ContactTable.png) center center no-repeat; }

Alright I have condensed my code and solved my own problem. thanks for looking at it for me, but I figured it out. There was a random filter thrown into one of the tables which caused all that to be invisible.

Don't listen to likwidek. If you can even read the jibberish, you have a skill that people will pay you for. Better to start with people you know and are patient with you, but just b/c you haven't mastered something doesn't mean you don't have a talent with it that is worth something.

I was giving constructive criticism:
My point was simply that doing Pro Bono work is the best way to build a portfolio and get experience. I never felt right charging people for something unless I was certain I knew what I was doing. Plus you have no idea how powerful word of mouth is from deals like that.
The other idea I offered was simply that if he was going to take the guys money, use a myspace profile editor (mygen), and didn't know how to edit it; he should find an expert, maybe some hungry college kid or something to fix it, learn a little, and cut him a small percentage. It's a win win.
If it had been a nonprofit deal I would have looked at it in a totally different light. I'm just speaking from my own business experience in what helped me gain great word of mouth and how I learned.
