Title: Handgun Suggestions...
Post by: Fuse on October 25, 2007, 12:33:32 am
Reread the title. SUGGESTIONS. Not a political debate please.

I am debating between a few different handguns right now. I want a small CCW sized 9mm or .40. Preferably with an accessory rail. Good quality, obviously. Nothing rough on the hands. Here's what I'm looking at.

Taurus Millennium Pro series
(http://www.taurususa.com/images/imagesMain/145SSP.jpg)
Good size. Lower priced than other options. Feels good in my hand. No accessory rail on the 9mm or .40.

Beretta Px4 or Px4 SC.
(http://www.berettausa.com/product/spotlight/images/images%20spotlight%202007/Px4Storm%20Subcompact/Px4Storm_subcompact1.jpg)(http://www.berettaweb.com/Beretta%20PX4/px4-due.jpg)
The Px4 is a good size and feels good in my hand, but the SC looks like a much smaller grip - close to the 9000S (which is too small for me). Supposedly less recoil because of the twisting locking system. Sizable grips, though I think the hashing on them will make my hand hurt while shooting. Pricey.

Springfield XD9 Subcompact (or the 4" compact version)
Great size. Feels good in the hand. Great safety features. Accessory rail.

Ruger SR9
(http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd244/Jumpin4Joy_album/digitalcamera314.jpg)
Small size, light, gorgeous. It's new so the pricetag is still over $500. After the initial batch these will be $400. I think I need to get my hands on one.

I have not shot any of these so I am looking for advice/suggestions. I am tempted to get the Beretta because I love a 92FS I shoot, but have kind of fallen in love with the XD series. I think I am liking the Ruger mor than the XD the more I read on it.

Ruger...Springfield....Ruger....Springfield. AHHHHHHH!!!!

You never know these days.  Better to have one (and know how to use it) and not need it than need one and not have it (or not know how to use one.)

If I were to get one(and i do plan on it), I'd personally get what I used to use as my service weapon:  The Sig Saur P229 .40.  That is one of the most beautifully firing weapons ever made.  It wasn't too big either. I'm sure it can be set up with an accessory rail, but this is also the same weapon our tactical unit uses.

As an Englishman I find the entire concept completely bizarre.  Besides, I prefer to kill with my bare hands.

However, if I had to have a gun, the XD9 does look like a rather nice penis replacement.

I love Sigs, but i don't want anything >$500. My original idea was something smaller than the P229 as well...Not much, just a pinch.

I really think I'm goign to get that SR9. It's not top o the line, but it looks great, has shown some promising results in tests, looks great, would be easily handeled by the wife (maybe not so good), is 17+1 cap, looks great, is a great size, amazing price for comparable guns ($400 after first 2000) and did I mention it looks great?

But then again, I do LOVE the XD series. FUCK!

BTW, I am looking for a gun for HD and also sport target shooting. I haven't been shooting for almost a year and a half and miss it.
I usually shoot my fathers M9 - Beretta 92FS.

Phienyx has it right.

If you trust your life to anything but a SIG, you're a fool.

Sig has a beautiful range of amazing 9mm and .40 firearms.  I have many friends who are law enforcement officers for various cities or counties in Florida.  As far as I know, all of them trust their lives to only Sig firearms.  They are great to hold, great to fire, and are some of the best firearms I have ever seen.  Take Phienyx's suggestion and definitely look into the P229.  It is available with a tactical rail.  When I was interested in purchasing a handgun, my friend Jordan who is a police officer in Miami-Dade recommended the 9mm P229-DAK with tactical rails.  He told me it is his primary service weapon.

Of course the first thing you should do before purchasing anything, is find a range that allows you to rent all the firearms you're interested in.  Buy a lot of ammo, and put a couple hundred rounds through each.  It'll cost you quite a bit, but it'll give you a chance to really get familiar with each weapon in question.

EDIT: This is why I try not to post from my Sidekick... Missed both of your replies, Fuse.  Nevermind my post. :) I think you should reconsider, though.

Gah, gun specs... I'm like -_-

Personally, I don't believe in guns. If people didn't buy guns there wouldn't be as high a crime rate :/

Saying that though, as they say 'Guns don't kill people, people do,'

I am.... big time. I have actually always wanted either a Sig 226 or 229. I saw a special edition P229 that was nickel (i think) plated and gorgeous at a gunshow not too long abck that made me want one even more - but price is an issue.

I have pretty much narrowed it down to either the XD sub-compact 3", XD compact 4" ($500 at local store), or that Ruger SR9 when the price drops closer to $400.

I said I didn;t want a political debate, but here i go.

Lets assume a few things.
1.A gun can kill someone...like a shovel
2a.Guns are devices to do something and on thier own are a paper weight... like a shovel
2b.A gun needs an outside influence by a person to kill...like a shovel
3.Criminals do bad things and get thier hands on devices to do bad things.
4.They do this even if there are laws against it.
5.Bad people do bad things to good, defensless people
6.Bad people are less inclined to do bad thing to people if they perceive there may eb a threat there.

So considering the above assumptions, if you outlaw weapons, the good, innocent, law-abiding citizens will get rid of/not own guns while the criminals will still obtain them the same way they obtain drugs or illegal weapons now, then use them on the innocent people because they know they will not dare break the law.

Fuck that. Give me CCW. I hate living in Illinois.

Even the government has done studies and tried to prove that outlawing guns lowers crime... guess what, it doesn't. You go to vermont where they have an open carry policy and I gaurentee you won't be mugged.

Nope, this was a specialty one. I wish I could tell you more or show you. The plating had a tinge of color to it, but not just one color. Sort of like the car paint that changes the color depending on ow you looked at it, this was similar, but the color was so faint sometimes it looked more like a reflection. Hard to describe.

While I woud absolutly LOVE a Sig, I don't think there any way I'm getting one new for under $500. The 229 DAK are sold at my local gunshop for between 750 and 850. Price is an issue here, guys. =(

The Desert Eagle is so impractical that it's not even funny.  The Baby Eagle, however, is a different story.

Oh man... I spent over 3 hours at the range today shooting a 9mm P226, and the 9mm P229 Crimson Trace....  I'm in love with the P229.  The gun fires amazingly, and the laser sight built into the grip is just awesome.

But with a $1200 price tag, it's going to have to wait...  I suppose I could go with the P229 DAK for $850, But then no laser sight. :(

Touche! But, I doubt an open carry policy would work here in Britain! Hell I like to shoot guns, I just don't believe in having one in the house :)

You just can't beat a good olde shotgun/clay pigeon shooting :)

Hell, even air rifles are fun!

I don't know anything of the culture there. Is there a large violence problem?
While I live in a very good part of a "safe" town, I would still trust my own safety to me and my own hands than just hope for the best.

By the way, I've now narrowed it down to either the Springfield XD9 4", OR the Smith&Wesson M&P9 4", or the Ruger SR9 that I am checking out tomorrow.

It's starting to get very hairy imo. I live in a village so it's very unlikely that I'll be shot :) I just couldn't trust myself with a gun if some lunatic came into the house; I'd most prob just shoot him/her without question :(

CCW is state based. Some states you can walk in, put the gun on your hip and as long as you are not a felon or mentally ill, your ok. Others you need a permit for it. Others, like Illinois, there is absolutly no CCW allowed.

From what I know, you don't have to be licensed to OWN a firearm.  You must be licensed to CARRY a firearm concealed on your person.

Anyone, except for criminals/convicts, are allowed to own firearms under the Second Amendment.

It's location based. CCW laws are state based, but there are some places where gun ownership can be limited. You want an example? I'm glad you asked.

It is illegal to own a handgun in Chicago city limits. Yes, you will get in trouble if you have one locked in a fort knox protected box unloaded. Illinois also does not allow CCW at all. No allowance. Zip. Nil. Nu-uh. Not gonna happen, period. Meanwhile other state you just have to request it and you get your permit. Wala, cover your shit up and you can keep it on you locked, cocked, and ready to go. I don't know buying laws in other states, but in Illinois you have to have a FOID card. FOID=Firearms Owners IDentification Card. With one you can buy and there are some ranges and store that won't even let you in without presenting it. In Indianna a background check is done to buy in a 3 day waiting period.
Title: Re: Handgun Suggestions...
Post by: Tecknik on October 28, 2007, 04:55:23 pm
Yeah, background checks are done for all gun purchases.  Some states will do them faster than others.  Florida used to have a three day wait period, now they are up to a five day wait period.  Some states may take as little as 15 minutes. :x
Title: Re: Handgun Suggestions...
Post by: Phienyx on October 29, 2007, 12:50:01 pm
In Michigan, you are able to request a CCW permit and the burden is on the state to prove why you should not have one.  You'll have to take some classes so they know you are capable of safely handling a firearm, but after you've been approved, you're ready to go.

I told you that Sig was a freakin' beautiful weapon.  Its a bit expensive, but it would definately be worth it.

Needing some advice here:

I'm planning on purchasing a handgun next month.  I don't want anything fancy or expensive, and I don't know much about various models; I'm simply looking for something to keep away in the house.  Where should I look (pawn shops, buying new, etc.) and what would you recommend based on what I've stated?  Thanks.
Title: Re: Handgun Suggestions...

My first suggestion is to always buy a handgun new.  No pawn shops or what not.  Its important to know a weapon's history.

I'm in the same boat as Jeyk. The only thing I know about handgun models is what people tell me and opinions are so varied it's impossible to distinguish. Aside from buying magazines and reading specs I won't understand, is there a more efficient (idiot's guide?) to learning about them?

ps.... are those S&W Sigma small enough to fit in a purse? I'm liking the price.

And for Subb's benefit... I will soon be living alone again, and although I don't have to walk to and from in the middle of the night anymore, Hattiesburg is still a bit violent and I have "EASY TARGET" written all over my forehead. And there's a very nice range near my place in Mobile where I could go and practice, learn to clean it and take care of it, cause if you don't know what you're doing you're more likely to hurt yourself in a threatening situation than defend yourself.

I strongly suggest going to your local shooting range (if they have firearm rentals), and testing out a few different firearms before deciding on one from seeing pictures.  All firearms are made differently, as are people.  A firearm that is a great fit for one person, may not be a great fit for another person.  You need to see how the firearm you are thinking about purchasing fits your hand, and how comfortable you feel firing it.

How much does it cost in your state?  It's $117 here, which is the only thing steering me away from getting it at the moment.  Plus, I have a fear of accidentally shooting myself in the nuts.  Protect the genes!  I'll get over it in due time. :)

$140. I assuming it will cost a couple bucks more for the fingerprinting services, training course, and return postage as well.

Of course, this is all before I have the money to actually purchase a handgun. :)

I've been looking at Glocks. Always loved 'em. Dependable, sturdy as hell, and solid shooters.

Of course, if I had the money I would get a Mateba 6 Unica. (I.E., Vash's gun ah-la Trigun)

It takes 3 days to get a handgun, but the conceal and carry permits can take a long time. Illinois doesn't allow them but I guess there's some talk about allowing them in the near future here.

Its a great gun.  I may switch my backup to that one day.  We use the tactical as our duty weapon, I have no complaints and suggest it to others.

As for Illinois' hippies, "You think criminals obey the law because its written down?"

I'm getting it in .40

Its pretty much what I carried as my duty weapon when I was a po-po...hehe.

If I ever get back into that line of work, I'll most likely carry it as my back up......although I'd be hard pressed to get it into an ankle holster and I don't know any departments that let you carry two on the hip.

Right now, its part of my plan to prepare myself to assist with any situation that might present itself.  I plan on getting some FEMA training as well as first responder training as well......because these days, you just never know......

It'll scare the piss out of a cop if he goes for his registration and insurance info. ;-)

In Michigan, unless we also have a concealed pistol license, it has to be in a locked case and out of immediate reach of anyone in the vehicle....preferably a locked trunk.

What's the poitn of having it then?  It does you no use.

If you "needed" and got it they will argue you assaulted/murdered so and so because instead of running you took the time to remove your weapon from a locked container.

Remember, the same people that write your laws have their own personnel police and protection.  So they know what you should do to protect yourself.

That is the law if you have a legally purchased and registered weapon.  A concealled pistol license is eomthing completely different.  Then you can carry it on your person as long as you can conceal it.

Wow, it's been a long time sinse I started this thread.

S&W MP .40 Compact will be mine when I can afford it.

I went to a shop today to buy up a used M&P .40 Compact for $450. I walked out with a new full sized M&P 9mm for over $600.

Reasons?
-This will be the first gun I've owned. I've shot many, but not owned.
-My wife may need to use this - a compact is not a good choice for someone who hasn't even seen a gun in person until she met me. Also there is no way a .40 will be her first experience. Compact + .40 = not good for a first time shooter.
-Cheaper ammo
-17rd vs 10rd

UGH! I wanted that compact, or one of the compact 9mm, but I think this will be a great choice for me as well. No complaints.

I won't mention the price.

No self-respecting woman....or man would use a pink gun.  Altough getting shot with a pink pistol would be the ultimate in humiliation.  lol

You know I hate pink but I appreciate the thought :)

And no, I decided against it. I prob would have gone with a .40 compact like yours if I had bought one, though. My grandmother carries a .22 in her purse, and my grandfather used to lug around a .357 Magnum.

I only wanted one when I was at Hooters and driving home late late at night in a Hooter's uniform and carrying loads of cash on me.

Put 134 rounds through it today. This thing feels great in the hand. I could have put another 500 down if I had the time and money. It seems to have a bit more of a kick than my fathers 92FS, but not much.
Dont have action shots, but have the first two casualties....

1st magazine through my new M&P. 15ft
2 way low
8 slightly low
7 good mass shots

The drawn on bullseye is where I was aiming, so it shoots a tad bit low.

1 way low
2 low right
1 slight high/right
30 good mass shots

Just curious, do you prefer an indoor range to an outdoor range?  The outdoor range I went to was MUCH nicer than the indoor one.

I'll have to find the first target I ever shot - it was terrible, lol.

Haven't shot at an official outdoor range yet, but have shot at my family's hunting cabin many times - and many years ago. The local range I goto here has a nice one that can be used up to 300 yards. I'd love to take my fathers AR-15 or my buddy's M4 out there...

Just got my MP back from having some work done.
-Burwell trigger job (about 3.75 lbs)
-Front grip sharkskin texturing
-Left and Right sharkskin texturing
-Warren Tactical 2-dot night sights - added the JohnO hi-vis front sight mod (http://pistol-training.com/articles/the-johno-diy-high-visibility-front-sight) (sloppy, i need to redo it)
wootage!

-MP & Humidor1 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/rubixx/MP/FILE0003.jpg)
-MP & Humidor2 (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/rubixx/MP/FILE0004.jpg)
-Blurry sights (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/rubixx/MP/FILE0006.jpg)
-Sights in light (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/rubixx/MP/FILE0007.jpg)
-Sights in dark (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/rubixx/MP/FILE0008.jpg) (doesnt do them justice)
-Better Day (http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/warren-johno-daylight-350x233.jpg) and Night (http://pistol-training.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/warren-mp-ns.jpg) shots of the sights.

The trigger is soooo nice. If anyone has/gets an MP, I strongly suggest you check out www.burwellgunsmithing.com

I'm rather unfamiliar with custom work/enhancements/attachments, such as those you have listed above.  What would you recommend for a Ruger P95?

Night sights are great for a HD weapon. I love the WT 2-dot setup: quick aquisition and they stand out pretty well. The texturing is exactly what it sounds like - texturing on the front of the grip and where the index finger lays when put on the rail in a safe position. Triggerjobs are very nice, but seeing as the P95 is a true double-action pistol I'm not sure how much you'd need one.

Another great product that is hit-or-miss with some people are lasers. By far the best application of this is the Crimson Trace grips. They're pricy, but worth it. They have a set for the P95.

No laser for me.  Its just a "HEY HERE I COME"  beacon as far as I'm concerned.  Tritium night sights = the shiznit. ....and yes my Sig has em.  I'll get some pics for ya.

Thats why the CT ones are so nice, they have a pressure switch so it's only on when you need it. Not like it's an actual beam. I keep mine for home defence, so a laser and a flashlight is very useful.
