Hey guys. Just thought I'd let you all know my computer has died. (I guess I have really bad luck with that.) I've described what happens to a friend of mine. (When I attempt to boot up after loading it goes to a black screen then a blue screen quickly appears and the computer restarts) He seems to believe that my harddrive is messed. I don't know how long it's going to take me to get a new harddrive... if worse comes to worse my friend has offered me a spare one he has. I'm going to do whatever it takes to get up and running again even if it mean buying a new computer. (although that will take considerably longer than getting a new harddrive). Until then I will continue to keep you guys informed via my dad's laptop.
-
aw ven that sucks. sorry about that.
i'm thinking that with all the dying pc's around here we should have a dedicated section for that :(
-
Nevermind... My computer just randomly started working perfectly again... soooooo.... disregard my last post... =p
-
WTF? hahah.
-
lol69?
-
z0MGWTFBBQ HAX!!!11!!!1!!!1!!!1!0/\/3!!!1111!!onetwo!!!11!!!
i dunno... i wanted to fit in... =p think I over did it?
-
Nah. You're like ub3r l33t forreal yo, like Br01n PWN1N6 w1t hax0rz!
-
Turn off automatic restart on fatal error (it's in your system properties)
-
I have the same problem... it either works or it doesn't :(
-
Turn off automatic restart on fatal error (it's in your system properties)
Destyn is wise!
Advanced Tab, Error Reporting section, on the Sys Properties.
This will give you BSOD next time anything happens, and won't restart.
Note down the main error message (might not make sense), and the numbers (like 0x0432568E) and then restart manually.
Post up the info you wrote down, and we'll debug for ya.
Hopefully, it wont happen again!
-
Cool... done... now it's only a matter of time until my computer decides to hate me again =p
-
You can also try www.eventid.net There are usually answers there as well..
-
yeah i was hoping you wern't going to buy a new hard drive since it seemed like a software problem more than hardware so glad its working and you didn't make that mistake. Generally speaking if it just keeps screwing up often you can always do a format if you have a windows disk... I personally like to do it once a year anyway.
-
Ok guys it happened again... this time i wrote down some of the info on the blue screen o' death.
It said an error had occured in the windows file ati2dvag.
It said that the device driver was stuck in an infinate loop.
Check the drivers for updates.
Tech info:
*** STOP : 0x000000EA (0x85DB14A0, 0x86CD7668, 0xF78BECBC, 0x00000001)
-
So.... you checked for updated drivers?
You should completely remove the old ones before you install any new ones. I would suggest you find and run the ATI Cleaner tool, and remove the device from Windows then install the new drivers
-
damn ATI i had the same prob on my bros computer, i uninstalled drivers, cleaned them off with driver cleaner and reinstalled, but still had the same damn problem. I had to tottally reformat and install clean drivers and then it worked, I tried tons of things to get it to work but that is the only thing i could get to fix it, I hope you dont end up having to do that, but i format every 6 monthsish anyway.
-
OK... so after reinstalling the drivers and doing a system restore I havn't had any issues starting my computer. Now I have a new problem. After starting my computer getting to the desktop... anywhere between 30 seconds to 5 - 6 mins my monitor goes black and acts like the computer is not on. No error message or anything... the computer is just completely unresponsive.
-
Also I just noticed... after this happens if i dont wait a few mins when I try to restart the comptuer. The computer turns on but the screen stays blank and the monitor acts as if the computer is off.
-
ok it seems now my computer is just not starting up at all... as with the previous post the computer turns on but the screen stays blank and the monitor acts as if the computer is off.
-
Hit F8 when loading up, choose VGA mode. You should be able to get into Windows that way and remove the bad drivers
-
it doesnt even get that far destyn... i hit the power i can here the computer running... nothing else happens.
-
Install the MAINBOARD CHIPSET DRIVERS.
These handle the control of requests from software (the ATI dll) to the hardware (Graphics Card).
The chipset drivers will be the bus driver for the BUS, which takes the data across the board, sort of. If it doesn't know the best route, or has trouble checking who has a ticket, then it might not get the passenger to the destination!
Also, along with latest SP and fixes with XP, get latest DirectX.
(and the clean ATI driver thingy too)
-
i dunno know how I'm gonna find and install the mainboard chipset drivers... seeing as nothing at all happens when i turn on the power. =/ just a black screen, the monitor not registering the computer is on and no activity at all from the computer itself.
-
So I would guess your gfx card is either unseated or dodgy... what BIOS beeps are you getting?
-
bios beeps?
-
heh, didn't see the post where it doesn't start :)
Hmmmn, computer not starting now... no activity = no fan noise = no beeps.
Open the side of the case (it wasn't a laptop was it?).
Does the fan on either the CPU or the PSU move a *fraction* when you push the power button? Try with a cold reset if there is a main power button at back of pc.
If NO - Power Supply could be dead, which would be best.
Check all connections to ensure htey are seated correctly.
Good luck!
-
ok... well by luck the computer actually started up and i did a full system recovery... things seem fine so far... just getting new drivers ect.
-
I've run into this problem several times in the past and it has always turned out to be an issue with your video card. It's either not seated in properly (like Destyn suggested) or is about to fail completely. Re-installing drivers may seem like the answer but if drivers were the problem you still should have gotten past the P.O.S.T.
-
what do you mean by seated properly? I hope the card isn't failing... it's a pretty new card... it's only 6 months old or so... not sure... I'll ask my friend when he bought it.
-
Check to make sure it's screwed in, and that all the connectors are firmly in the slot
-
Yeah, basically the gold strip that connecting "into" the mainboard may not be in as much as possible. Note that some mainboards don't have a AGP/PCI slot deep enough to take the entire gold strip. As long as the strip is LEVEL, and not at an angle, then you should be fine.
Do this for all cards.
Recovery won't do anything - the machine wasn't starting, so hardware issue, not software. It could also be heat, but I think that's a bit extreme..... normally get beeps, unless the heat is also affecting PSU.
You definately have a hardware issue, and it will probably appear again - sorry :(
-
Ok well... after checking that the card is seated properly... it's fine... but for the past 2 days I havn't been able to get my computer to start up at all... again I'm just getting a black screen as soon as I start up the computer. I'm really starting to lose hope at this point =/
-
Can you verify....
Your COMPUTER doesn't START (ie no power, or lights, regardless of what's on the monitor), or WINDOWS doesn't start (ie power, lights, but just a black screen)?
-
ok... I physically removed the video card... computer works fine now it seems. Now I guess it's just a matter of getting a new video card. I hope... I don't want to waste 100 buck just to find out that the new card doesn't work for whatever reason either. Is there any way to tell if it's the video card or if it's my motherboard/apg slot that has the problem?
-
Can you verify....
Your COMPUTER doesn't START (ie no power, or lights, regardless of what's on the monitor), or WINDOWS doesn't start (ie power, lights, but just a black screen)?
Windows did not start... the power light was on but it was a blank screen.
-
If removing the card makes it work does that mean there is a built in video to the motherboard? If so you might need to disable that one in the bios or disable it via a jumper, it could be getting confused with two videos, if that is even the case with this motherboard?
-
ok... well i checked the bios... the build-in card is disabled. I put an older agp video card in there and the computer booted up and ran just fine. So now I'm fairly sure it was the videocard itself that was the problem.
-
Yep certainly sounds like you got a bad video card.
-
Well... just got back from CompUSA... picked up a ATI Radeon X1300... works great... no problems on start up... i've restarted, shut down, etc a bunch of times and I havn't had a problem yet. So it looks like the problem has been solved... thanks for the help guys.
-
I have a X1300, they're Hawt, I had the same problem as you Ven but since I bought a 1 GB stick of RAM all my problems have gone :D
-
I spoke too soon, still crashing in game... >.<
-
Okay, my ATI control centre says that VPU has reset my gfx accelerator or something.... if I get it again I'll copy the message. This is pissing me off now; the card has been fitted perfectly, I checked, I updated it.... ARGGGG
-
"VPU Recover has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands"
-
Reinstall the MAINBOARD drivers!
-
I'm a computer nooblet! >.> please explain!
-
your card could be overheating as well... which has happened to me before... the fan on it broke.
-
I think I'm okay with the fan, I have a side fan on the case which is just above the card just in case.
-
well now, I am seriously miffed, it says that my card is not compatible with my KOTOR games >.>
Also, what are the mainboard drivers? and how do I re install them? :p
-
Basically, all hardware you buy comes with drivers...
Your mainboard/motherboard is what all other hardware connects to.
This will also have drivers - The main controller on the mainboard is the CHIPSET.
Therefore you need the CHIPSET drivers for your mainboard.
Generally, you can get the mainboard model, go to the manufacturers site, and download. If you have a DELL or something, then the computer you ordered should have a drivers page on the DELL site. If it was a custom build, then you need to investigate more - do you have a mainboard box (man and model will be on it)? If not check SYSTEM PROPERTIES as it MAY say on the main SYS PROPERTIES page.
Otherwise, restart and on the first black screen there should be a model number.
Basically, just have to identify your hardware, and get the right drivers - as with any hardware!
The chipset drivers, not being installed, are the biggest common problem for graphic card *software related* issues.
-
i take that I need to download all of the drives? :P I custom built mine, all went well except for this issue; thanks ALOT ket. I wuv joo! >.<
-
Hehe, there is probably a few drivers for your mainboard, if you find the right download section.
-Chipset
-Audio
-Graphics
-Network
-USB (Pre-XP)
-Other special devices.
-
well, er.... I cannot get on my CPU at all now, once I log in after about 5 seconds i go to a blue screen. Code:
0x000000FC (0xA69158B0, 0x29A561, 0xA69157EC, 0x0000001)
-
lol, oh dear!
0x000000FC (ATTEMPTED_EXECUTE_OF_NOEXECUTE_MEMORY)
You have a DEP enabled processor, more than likely.
To stop BSOD for now, go into BIOS, and turn DEP off (Data Execution Prevention).
This should get you into windows (might want to F8 into safe mode for easier control).
Then go to:
SYSTEM PROPERTIES
> Advanced Tab
> Data Execution Prevention Tab
Here you can specify the program (driver) that you last installed (you might have to remove drivers, and install one by one with restart until you BSOD). Once you add the program to the list you can go to the BIOS and turn DEP back on.
I know that DEP has to be turned off to install certain applications - I've done this before (Although no BSOD from it).
-oh you can leave DEP off in the BIOS if you want. Make sure you have good anti-virus tho.
Good luck, report back!
-
KK, 'bout to switch on the computer... wish me luck, I have AVG free anti-virus; t'is better than McAffee or whatever.. >.< brb
-
*cough* where I'n BIOS can I find DEP? I've spent 10 mins looking for it! >.< *cough* :p
-
Ah, balls to it, I give up. I might try tomorrow; if not I'm selling the fuckin' thing. I'm getting nothing but shit from this damned thing.
-
Um, depends on the BIOS.. might have to refer to a manual.
You can go to SAFE MODE (F8) and uninstall the last drivers you installed, that caused it to f-up.
I recommend CHIPSET drivers are installed before GRAPHIC, btw.
Good luck.
Hehe, and I am a McAfee fanboy :P

Oh man what happened to my computer this summer, which caused me to spend the whole summer without one, was pretty much the same issue i think ven had, where it just wouldnt boot up at all and everything pointed to the video card which pissed me off cause it was brand new and i got it for free too! Well i tested it in another computer and it worked in that one, and then i went on to a bunch of other crap which ended up being just a fucked up mobo, i had to go get every single thing tested before Asus would RMA my board though, I had to test my vid card, my power supply, my processor and my ram....took me a month just to be able to get all that arranged cause they didnt tell me that in one call i would just go get one thing tested and then they would say well lets try this now, and on and on till they finally said yeah your board is fucked :(
-
Damn, how come everyone has problems!! :P
Well, certainly the error could still be hardware - afterall, if the software IS working fine it'll send the data from whatever file along to the hardware, where it then dies. The BSOD still returns an error based somewhat on the file/data as that is when the fault happened.
Fingers crossed, that's not the issue here. Seems to point to DEP, but then DEP could be screwed (which is CPU).
Subb, post me the mainboard make and model, and I'll have a look at bios info for ya.
-
Linky for the namey (http://www.epox.nl/products/view.php?product_id=483)
-
WTF!!
http://www.epox.nl/downloads/manuals/?product_cat_id=1
Your mobo is like the ONLY one which doesn't have the manual online... fishy.
Just realised you are AMD, not INTEL.
Although they have the same DEP technology, they deal with it slightly differently. You are not in the BIOS. You instead need to alter the WINDOWS BOOT.INI file.
Boot Windows in SAFE MODE (F8)
Go to:
SYSTEM PROPERTIES
> ADVANCED tab
> STARTUP & RECOVERY button.
> EDIT button (in the "System Startup" area of the window)
Here is your BOOT.INI
Look for this section (may not be exact):
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN
Change /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN to /NOEXECUTE=AlwaysOff
(If you don't have the /NOEXECUTE switch, simply add it to the end of the line.)
Save and reboot.
I would still advise uninstalling the drivers, then reinstalling. Usually DEP will only kick in during install for legit progs (did it BSOD during INSTALLING, or after INSTALLING?), so you only need to turn OFF during install, and turning ON when install is done.
If you BSOD after install only, then I might query the DRIVER manufacturer to ask why their driver will crash with DEP enabled. They may have a secondary driver to use on DEP machines.
Here is a DEP test:
http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/
-
/NoExecute=OptIn - This is the default. DEP is enabled.
There are four options to this switch:
- OptIn - Default setting. Only Windows system binaries are monitored by DEP.
- OptOut - Enables DEP for all processes. Users can create a list of applications which are not monitored by DEP using the DEP configuration options listed in the System Control Panel applet.
- AlwaysOn - Enables DEP for all processes. DEP is always applied, and exceptions lists are ignored and not available for users to apply.
- AlwaysOff - Disables DEP.
/execute - Disables DEP.
-
It BSOD when I rebooted after installing the drivers.
Rebooting the machine now after the AlwaysOff cmd..... thanks Ket :D
-
Annnnnnnd, just logged on; and blue screen :'(
-
The drivers could be in a bad state after all these BSODs.
-Uninstall the drivers you last installed one by one in SAFE MODE but
-RESTART AFTER EACH one uninstalled to NORMAL MODE to see if you BSOD.
-If so, repeat until you find the driver that is causing your woes.
Now we have a suspect, reinstall the other drivers you just uninstalled (if any), and reboot after each to check you don't BSOD.
Once we confirm the single driver that makes you BSOD, get back here and let me know what it is.
Basically, we want to rule out everything before we go to hardware, because if it's hardware, then that sucks.
-
kk, just uninstalled graphics....
rebooted, still crashed....
re installing....
Oh on another note; I tried to put in my motherboard CD and it said :
"The System cannot find the file specified." =/
-
okay, now I cannot install my damned gfx drivers!
"Setup was unable to complete the installation.
Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VDAdriver before running setup"
:'( ffs
-
Do that.
Install driver from MS default list "Standard VGA Adaptor" or something.
Then install yer CHIPSET drivers, if not already there.
Then install yer REAL GFX drivers.
-
Sorry, just had dinner..... okay; noob moment... MS default list? where is that? :S sorry dude :/
-
Uh, when you get prompted to install, don't select HAVE DISK, ... err:
I did a random google image search for what I mean...
http://docwiki.gumstix.org/Windows_XP_usbnet
Follow steps 1 - 5. Replace STEP 4 with Graphics Adaptors, and STEP 5 should show a list.
Find the standard on the list.
-
No Graphics adaptors there... Ican see Display adaptors though :S
-
Thats the one.
-
If that doesn't work Subb try adding another user ID in safe mode. You said it's BSOD after you log on, could be a corrupt profile
-
Right, I have on the Manufacturers side:
ATI
ATI Technologies Inc.
ATI Technologies, Inc.
Okay, and by standard Ket you mean... .erm.... the first one? dont worry I havent clicked anything yet! >.< why the hell did I have the bright idea of building my own comp?! :S
-
don't find ATI
look for "Standard VGA Adaptor" or something simlar.
Will give you shit display, but ensures intsall.
It's eitehr right at the top, or under the MS list I think.
Basically, the same one that is used when in SAFE MODE.
Microsoft XP GFX driver STANDARD, but I aint sure on the name.
If you really can't find it, go with ATI... will be back here and then (dinner is being prepared!) so might not see me for a wee an hour or so dunno yet
-
Yeah can't find the VGA do hikkie and ATI has soooooo many options, like 10. I'm gonna quit for the night. Thanks for the help ket :) I'll put myself on vacation since I cannot get in game.
-
Sorry, it's been a while since I was anywhere near that screen.
Make sure the the "Show compatible hardware" option is ticked, if available.
Choose any basic ATI card, or one that matches your card name specifically.
"ATI RADEON x850 SERIES" - that'll do for me, with my card.
Find one similar to that with your model, and go for it.
You can't really go wrong - if you BSOD just SAFE MODE remove that driver.
-
I'll try :) I have a X1300....
No show compatible hardware thingy here :/ ffs....
-
okay, I booted up and I was fine UNTIL a few mins after I installed my gfx drivers :/
-
Ok, lets recap.
DEP still disabled.
CHIPSET DRIVERS installed.
BASIC driver installed.
ATI driver installed - > BSOD (on restart).
Presume you are running XP Home or Pro.
You are trying to install this driver? : 6-11_xp-2k_dd_37616.exe?
The procedure you should be using for install is just running the EXE and running through the setup.
OR are you downloading the full catalyst?
The cat setup comes with 2 drivers (+ 1 software) : Display Driver, Catalyst Control Center, WDM Drivers.
If installing CAT, uninstall again, and try just the DRIVER.
If installing just the driver, uninstall again and try an older one, from here:
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonxprevious-xp.html
-
Okay, just wondering.... would a refrag be any help? :D
-
nvidia ftw lol
-
Okay, just wondering.... would a refrag be any help? :D
No don't Regrag it!!!! That will only make it worse...
But you could always DEFRAG....that would help.
-
Really?
Hmm.... system restore? :p
-
omg, it's working!
-
oh and now while installing the new catalyst.... it says: "The minimum .NET Framework version required is 2.0. Please install before launching application." <- wtf?
-
Run windows update and you'll get the framework.
-
>.> thanky-jun.
-
Thanks for the Help ket, i owe you a beer....
Just my GFX accelerator to sort out now >.>
-
Ok, good to see things are going...
Did you do a system restore? If so, then it may have uninstalled quite a lot of system type things...
I had thought you did a restore at the beginning of all this?!
-
Nah, I thought it was the gfx drivers were fuckin' up the CPU.... but it was the mobo drivers >.>
So I uninstalled all the mobo drivers and pop it worked; didn't do a system restore.
-
The mobo drivers messing up sounds quite bad, generally... are you sure they were the correct ones!?
You don't need 'em, as windows will use generic drivers to do most of the jobs, but if you want a speed boost, and/or having glitches with graphics, they should really be doing their job.
