Title: Fraps / Mic recommendations
Post by: Anonymous on May 15, 2005, 02:16:06 am
Ok, first of all, I just got a new comp and this one can actually support Fraps. I know there are quite a few people in this faction that have it and I was wondering if you could either send the .exe to me via AIM or what not or post a link to where i can get the full version. I got the free version but it sucks and I want the real version so I can make some badass vids.

Secondly, I had a mic and it got tremendous feedback whenever I'm ingame. I bought a new Logitech headset and still had the same problem. I got a new comp and I still have the same problem. Can anyone give a me a good recommendation for a headset that they use?

I have the Logitech internet chat headset.

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/CA/EN,CRID=103,CONTENTID=6339

It has a volume control and mic mute switch in-line. It's got normal sound card input connectors.

As for feedback, as you may or may not know, it is caused by the looping of sound, so chances are that your mic is picking up whatever is coming out of your speakers.  The headset should eliminate that.  If it doesn't you might look at your sound adapter.

USB headphones run sound card emulation software.

That means they eat cycles you could be using to thow more polys at your GPU. Eating cycles also means less physics. Best procs on the planet can support about a 100 object max. (Unreal3 engine. Rar.) At least until the 30,000 object dedicated PPUs come out around xmas. But I digress...

USB headphones = teh suxxor. Unless you're using motherboard sound, in which case you're running mostly in emulation anywho, so there's no diff. Styan said it all with: "It's got normal sound card input connectors."

Yes they do. There's no other way to get sound from the bus through the HAL and into the DirectX layer. It's called a driver. The driver is what runs the emulation. Even if it's the driver provided with windows. Sorry to break your heart, but your headphones are USB and therefore, they suck. By definition. :P

Here's the test that proves the point.

Disable all of your sound hardware except for your headset.

You can still hear sound. Why? Because you have an emulated sound card.
