Generally 2000 will run faster than XP, but remember that XP is built on 2000 technology (which, in turn, is based on NT4). 2000 is very much an office environment product - ie its used on a workstation rather than a home pc more; this is one reason why I don't use it at home (in theory, it might not run a program I want). XP does run slower because its actually more stable (in the envronment stuff is running).
XP Professional has a lot of other features over 2000, Home is less secure, but Pro is very secure as things go. Obviously, all OS's have had major holes that have been fixed (just look at the service packs for 2000). As with everything, when something major is changed, some companies have to sort it out, hence the list above....
Note that SP2 has a major change (security and future compatability) that 2000 will never have... but of course I'll be going XP 64 soon anyway.

I'm going to stick to XP even after I get my AMD64 rig. After that, the only major OS swing I'm waiting for is Longhorn.
