Will hovercraft crews have some operational purpose at some point or is it just for "show"? (Please do not take my statement as being asked with a negative attitude. ) I am honestly curious about this. It'd be cool to have crews based around when a majority of them can be on at one time and have them operate as a team within the Matrix.
Also, will first mates also be assigned at some point?
I'm asking just because so many cool things can be done with the idea of hovercraft crews in an operational sense.
-
first mates are already assigned, and i think there just for show....
-
yeah there is already first mates
-
Yes first mates are assigned by the captians of the ship. So far from what I've been told by Doan is that the position is compltly for show and no real powers.
-
Oh ok. I thought maybe the Captains/Firstmates functioned as organizers when things needed to get done or were like in game admin/mods type persons.
Also, who are the first mates for the different ships? I'm not seeing this listed anywhere. Sorry for all the questions. I've just been wondering about this.
-
There aren’t necessarily first mates for each of our hovercrafts yet. For example, I think Evigilos just recently got their first mate assigned (congratulations ProfessorL!). It's up to the crew on when they assign it.
Crews are a good way to get to really know a small number of people in the faction. The loading dock/jacked in channels could get really crowded at times and that could make it hard to get to know people or to get people to know you. Crews eliminate that crowded problem and give you a chance to game with people you can get close and intimate with. ;) rawr
Want to get something known to the staff? You can tell your captain and he/grim could pass it on. Crews also allow you to participate/contribute to culture (whether it's short-buses or Naruto/animé or role-playing or pwnagism).
Although in terms of functionally, crews are there for "show", the real reason for crews lies within the social plane of this large area we call The Matrix Online. Plus, that's how the game is set up (captains make crews, crews join factions).
If you have any suggestions about how we can add to the crew experience, let us know!!!!!!!!!!!!11!111!one :D
-
Indeed, let us know.
I will be adding a "First Mate" status to the hovercraft/profile listings, since members are obviously curious.
Further, a hovercraft "mission" section will be added, allowing the captains to assign events or give general messages for their crew only.
Personally, I would love to see some crew action going on.
With 12 members per ship as standard, I can see maybe 3 members of each ship being online at any one time.
If a ship is lacking members when people are online, whereas another ship has all members, I would suggest a bit of a swap to try and even it all out...

I do have some ideas that might be interesting, fun and fulfilling. I'll write it up and post it.

Trying to sign up for my crew
"Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/followt/public_html/modules/prof/user/upship.php on line 5"
Also does that autosign me up for captainship?

If the idea for Hovercraft crew is for smaller groups to be able to get to know eachother, then there would need to be a reason tor them to work together on a regular basis. Many crew members assigned to hovercrafts are not even online much. Part of my thoughts/ideas would be that signing up to a hovercraft would be voluntary with the understanding that they were for people who are willing, able and have the intention of working with their crewmates within the Matrix on a regular basis.
Each crew member would have the loose responsibility of focusing on one or two skill sets and operate within those areas as needed while active in the "field". Each member would learn and take up a skill set or two so that when the come together as a whole unit in an operation, all or most areas are covered. Such a crew operating as a well oiled unit, would be a hard crew to beat, not to mention several crews operating as such.
That being said, the purpose of hovercrafts crews would be that these are the people that understand that it is their "responsibility" to aid other Angels if a call for assistence goes out or if action is being taken against other Zionists and action is required. This is not to say that other Angels can't jump in and help as well, but for other non-crewed members, going to help would be more optional than for hovercraft crew members.
I've seen too many instances where Angels have asked for help (yes even some of the more popular members) and no one even gave a verbal response to their requests....or only a couple members resonded and got slaughtered because everyone else was off doing their own thing. I'm not for telling people how to play or making them do things in game on a regular basis, but factions are there for a reason, and its not just to look cool and be a part of some meaningless click. Let me know if I'm wrong. If we're not willing to come to eachother's aid when needed and even when it may be a little inconvenient, then what are we other than individual players that just happen to wear the same faction tag?
Now for those that prefer to retain the option of doing their own thing at all times, they would not have to sign up to a hovercraft. It would be a member's choice to sign up to a hovercraft with the understanding that they may be the first called upon to assist fellow member that get into trouble.
We could even go as far as to assign coverage of districts/neighborhoods to certain crews to cover. This would not mean that they have to stay within those areas, it simply means that when something goes down in their area, that crew should be the first crew to respond to a problem in that area if they are available.
We could even have crews on standby on a weekly basis. For example: The Carpe Diem would be the first response crew for this coming week with the other crews on standby incase we need back up in a situation.
Captains and Firstmates would have some organizational responsibility within their crew and should probably have some abilities granted in TS to allow them to manage communication for their crew as necessary. Capt. and Firstmates would, of course have to be people that handle responsibility well and don't look at it as a position of "power".
I really like the whole idea of hovercrafts crews, it would just be cool for them to actually have a purpose that benefits FA. Having a purpose, would bring our crews together and provide some sense of fulfillment that only teams of players can bring to a game like this.
Thoughts?
